I like Polish coins [& actually I'm half Polish] unfortunately I haven't been able to afford a Polish coin in some years. This is one of my first acquisitions: I simply called a coin dealer back in 1998 and said I needed a Polish Thaler for a coin display & this is what he sent me. The date is 1634 in case you can't find it. Today people would slab these things or make a big stink about the condition but things were a lot more casual a few years ago. I bought this as an AU but then people really didn't call any Thalers unc.
I confess I haven't seen enough Polish coins to have an opinion, but that thaler is certainly very handsome!
This is a 1682 18 groscher (1/4 thaler) of Brandenburg. I'm told that back in 1682 Brandenburg included some territory that would be in modern day Poland and eastern Germany. Therefore, might we consider this a very old Polish coin?
Weeeell ... today Brandenburg is one of the 16 German states. But back then, Brandenburg-Preußen went further east, see here. That map shows the territory at the time your coin was minted. Today the Oder river (roughly in the middle of the map) is the western "border" of Poland. But I doubt he considered himself to be a Polish ruler. Christian
Okay here's even one that YOC hasta love.. Polish seige Thaler, actually I think these are called fire thalers. Legend says something about Thorn (Polish city) by Grace of God sucessfully resisted the seige (even tho they set much of the city on fire), Feb 16, 1629. I got this one from my good German friends at Dieter Gorney. Truly a thing of beauty.
ok, ok.........I give in.....this is a lovely coin!! I was referring to any coins since about 1900, which are all dire!, but their Thalers are nice......
Beauty ... eyes ... beholder. The taler from Thorn/Toruń sure is nice too (commemorates the end of the first Swedish siege), but there are lots of Polish coins which are nice or even stunning. If you don't like them, that is up to you of course. Christian
