I don't see his picture there, but I believe that Raymond Burr collected ancients. (I remember seeing a Vespasian denarius on a dealer's listed described as "ex Raymond Burr collection".)

I've heard that King Louis XIV was an avid ancient collector as well. Might any one know if this is true?

Vaguely emember reading something on another forum site about him ordering his diplomats to return to France with whatever ancient coins they could find, along with fulfilling their other duties, of course.

Oh, and two notable royal collectors were King Farouk of Egypt (reigned 1936- 1952) and King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy (reigned 1900- 1946). Farouk was mainly into "showy" coins, especially gold, and is well-known as having had one of the 1933 US $20 gold coins. (He was a voracious collector, who also left significant collections of antique furniture, fine art, automobiles, and one of the largest privately-held collections of pornography ever.) Victor Emmanuel was a more academic and focused collector, who wrote several important books on the coinage of Italy, and his collection is now housed in the Museo Nazionale Romano. Interestingly, Farouk died in exile in Italy, while Victor Emmanuel died in exile in Egypt.
