Howdy All, Now, I must give credit to JA, to quote @chrsmat71 "him and his nabateans!" I picked up this nice Nabatean from the Colorado Springs coin show last Saturday. The coin has a light patina to it, and a nice overall green color. So thanks JA (kind of)... (If I missed anything in the description let me know) Post some of yer' Nabatean's will ya'? Aretas IV 9 B.C. - 40 A.D. Obv. Aretas and Shuqailat Rev. Crossed cornucopias
I still haven't gotten over to that area yet---but I love the history and the coins!!! I'm sure JA will inundate this thread soon LOL
that's a nice nabatean coin aiden, cool pick up for a coin show.i just recently joined the nabatean club with some bargain bin scores.
Reading from the top of the reverse, right-to-left... Top line: heth, resh, taw, taw, or HRTT = Haratat = Aretas Middle line: shin, koph, yod, or SKY Under the cornucopias: lamedh, taw or LT = SKYLT or Shaqilat The Nabataean script is an abjad similar to Hebrew, both of which share Imperial Aramaic as an ancestor. Nabataean eventually evolved into modern Arabic.
I have seven which were purchased as a small group. Four still need to be photographed. Aretas IV with Shuquailat. I assume Aretas is on the left but on this coin, the left figure looks feminine (albeit with a mustache) and the right figure masculine. Oh! I know who he reminds me of! Conchita. Rabbel II and (Gamilat?) Aretas IV, commemorating his marriage to Shuquailat
Hello Everybody.. Here are Rabel 2 and Gamilat. Gamilat means beautiful in Arabic which is derived from Nabataean.
Nice coins guys and gal! I used the flash for the pic to show the green that it has in hand. Unfortunately the reverse pic shows to much glare for my taste...
