This thread piqued my interest in the Burmese script, of which I knew nothing to my embarrassment. I find it very intriguing, so I grabbed a bunch of coins and bills off eBay. Set 1, KM 38, 39, 40, and 41... I'm assuming these are nickel or aluminum. I don't have Krause, so if someone could tell me, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks Angelo! Dirt cheap stuff - it was probably all worthless the day it was printed, but still interesting from an artistic and historical perspective.
I actually just bought that set of bills on eBay last night. I like the style and the way everything looks. I really like the dragon/lion creature on their money, which is what attracted me to the coins to begin with. Reading the Burmese dates is actually pretty easy compared to other Asian money like Thailand because their numbers actually look like the guide says they will and they use the same date structure that we do so you don't have to convert from their calendar to ours.
Thanks for the tip! I was drawn to the lion as well, the Chinthe - evidently an ancient symbol, a creature that guards temples and pagodas, found extensively on the coinage and bills. Chinthe in front of Yangon City Hall
1976 while in Cambodia Our Cambodia national army guide sold me this. He told me it's was from Burma . Anyone know for sure it's a Burmese coin?
It's the Ū Thông (rising sun) motive found on ancient Southeast Asian coins, so it may well be Burmese. I have no skills whatsoever in attributing these coins or determining whether they're fake or not, so I stay away from them. Here is an interesting paper on the subject.
Thank you for the file.! Hopefully it's real ,only an expert or grading service will confirm if real.I cannot recall how much I paid for it but I know it wasn't a lot of money maybe $5.00/10.00 US. I just wish I had kept some notes from then that was just before Cambodia went crazy.
Send it to NGC if you want verification. David Vagi's crew could do it. It's worth a lot more than ten bucks if real. I'm not fond of slabbed ancients, but if I owned that coin, I would really like to know...
I may once my bank account gets back to normal. 50th Kennedy Gold coin about cleaned out my mad money. Plus chemotherapy treatments copay are tapping me out only four more then.??
Yup But doctors say I will not die from the skin cancer yet . but may before the Va repay's my copay money's.
Damn. I wish I could help. If I was a millionaire, I'd pay your medical bills. They say it's the thought that counts, but that's a lie. I know how poorly vets can be treated at a VA because we have a family full of vets.
I just google Angola coins or Aruba coins in google books and I was able to look through a Krause catalog. Try it
I also like the dragon/lion looking thing. It looks especially nice on Uncs. To the guy who got those Asian coins on ebay: yeah it sounds like a great buy. You gotta love ebay for those coins that pass through sometimes. And I think the Krause catalog is way off for those coins too, and it seems to be off for many other countries and some coins
I had editions of Krause in years past, just not recently. I'll pick one up - I like having a big catalog of coins, just to look through all the types. The listed values don't concern me much. I don't believe there's any such thing as an accurate price guide for any sort of coins.
