No need to wait for anyone else to look, since it looks like you two are the only ones still enjoying this thread Thanks for the comments btw #1 This one has an awesome portrait, a nice weight, and good toning, but the main reason its #1 is it's sentimental. This one represents a handful (5) of coins I've received as gifts. Coins that I would never want to part with, that I couldn't replace. It seems that the most rare thing about ancients is receiving them as gift from friends and family. Caracalla AR Antoninianus. 216 AD. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, radiate draped bust right, seen from behind / P M TR P XVIIII COS IIII P P, Serapis, modius on head, standing left, raising right hand & holding sceptre. Size: 22.5mm Weight: 5.3 grams RSC 349b. RIC 280b BMC 165. Hill (1964) 1573.
Nice portrait on the Caracalla. It seems his personality comes through on coins better than most. Btw Randy I seriously disagree its only a few of us enjoying your thread. Always remember there are 10 times the number of people who are unregistered and read CT than registered members.
It's clear that there are many, many people enjoying this thread -- certainly those who follow it even if they don't specifically reply to any individual coin that's pictured. I've certainly enjoyed it -- both the coins as well as the thought that is behind the choice of each coin. I would hope that others might want to start similar postings as well. Most collections are too extensive for the collector to show all of his/her coins, so listing the top ten or so "favorites" is a great way to learn about others' collections and the thinking that went into them.
Wow I am actually surprised this is a #1 coin. I agree that I do like the portrait. That is also one coin I have yet to acquire is an Antoninianus of Caracalla. I could have bought several over the years for less then $80 but it just hasnt been something high on my list. I want an Antoninianus of Domna though. Just for kicks I will pick my absolute favorite coin in your collection. Although I have a fairly high grade denarius of his, my favorite coin of yours is your Draped Bust Pius, http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-76844 Its a type you done see very often plus it's got a decent amount of wear & still be a nice grade.
Personally I would have chosen his #2 pick as his #1. Thats the beauty of it, though, right? Since all of us have different tastes, there are coins for all of us. It would suck if we all valued all coins the same..
Thank you very much all! I would like to more posts like this and Mat's too, or even just more ancient posts in general I left out quite a bit, I thought about the A. Pius denarius. It was also a gift one of the coins that #1 represented with out mentioning it: "This one represents a handful (5) of coins I've received as gifts." I didn't make any room for my Tetradrachm, or some of my Denarii and Antoninianii (is the right for plural??) I had a good idea of what I was going to post and kept changing it but the fact that its hard to chose is a good thing. Thanks again all for reading, I enjoy being able to share my collection with you all, as well as you sharing yours :hail: If you'd like to see more, here are most of the nice coins in my collection: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=3974
