Although I like them all, and am very impressed by how you manage to score all those gems in your first year, I would pick the Tarentum drachm : that one really stands out !!! Q
Discussing the top coins of the year is one thing, but what about the bottom ones? I mentioned that I am happy with all my purchases and have no regrets, but there are a couple of coins that left me wanting something more... That was either the moment I laid eyes on the coin or after researching the type a bit more and realizing I could do a bit better. The following coins are fine and pretty nice, but if an affordable upgrade would come along I would certainly go for it: Condition is the main reason for wanting an upgrade for these coins. In some cases one side is excellent but the other is lacking. The Alex tet reverse is great but the portrait could be better, and in the Ephesos case the bee is marvelous but the stag is lacking.
I would be happy with those in their condition (only a personal opinion). I must say that I somehow regret some of the coins I bought this year (and they are no match for yours). Good news was that they were cheap, but the condition is very bad. I like some wear on ancient coins, for me it makes them more interesting, like a proof that they were used for their purpose, they passed through history. But this doesn't mean I won't avoid coins with a lot of wear, unappealing, hard/impossible to attribute. Not the case with your last three anyway.
I'm with ambr0zie on this one. Those three coins are good enough for me just as they are. I do not rank coins by grade numbers but by interest and the difficulty it would take to find 'better' coins that are more interesting. Those are nice coins. I would spend my limited funds on different, perhaps more interesting???, coins rather than upgrading. I rarely get to upgrade a coin because the second one tends to be better than the first in some regards but not in every way so I end up keeping them both.
Wonderful coins POM. My favorites are the Rhodes didrachm (wonderful all around coin), the Histamenon (nice detail and a coin on my want list also) and the Taras drachm (for all the reasons you mention). Great year and thanks for sharing.
