We are touching here on what I consider a natural part of collecting. I once was a more specialized collector than I am now. I have always had some special interest but, over the years, I have had enough different special interests that my collection started to look more like a generalist gathering. I have visited Probus, Magnentius, Republicans and a dozen other specialties but none to the degree I did with the Eastern Septimius. However, in the last few years, I have added ten Republicans for every Septimius simply because that is what I found available. There are many wonderful coins out there that I don't have but finding ones that I find interesting and different withing a narrow specialty becomes harder as the collection grew. Maybe my specialty has always been what is currently available that spoke to me. I have never understood those who build a specialist collection only to sell it off and build another different one. I keep them.

There was a time I had a problem at shows knowing what to say when asked what I collect. Truth was 'coins I like at prices I can afford'. Telling that to a dealer is pointless. I could not say I collected Eastern mint Septimius because, when that was my interest, many dealers did not know how to recognize them. My current fad of choice is the class coins with some technical oddity certainly including errors but not excluding 'different' hair styles or things that are just hard to describe. I envy those of you who know what you want to buy next. I have absolutely no idea what the next coin that comes my way will be.
