Ok I'm new at this and thanks to Eng I now have three roman coins. Please tell me about these coins, and then you can post yours and tell me about them. for some reason some of my photos are side ways.
You can use a image editor to rotate or flip those images. This first coin is Gallienus. That's a starting point to figuring out the details and then the book reference ID. http://wildwinds.com/ Just look up Roman Imperial Coinage by ruler.
Here is how I attribute my coins, for example. Gallienus Billon Antoninianus. 267-268 AD, 4.2g, 22.0mm OBV: GALLIENVS AVG, Radiate head right. REV: IOVI CONS AVG, Goat standing or walking left. REF: RIC 207
It's late and I was just bout to log off, but I noticed your thread... The first coin is obviously Gallienus with a 'Zoo' (animal) reverse---a stag or antelope or goat??... The last appears to be of Valentinian I with a winged Nike or Victory reverse, but I would need to check further Unfortunately, I can't make out enough of the second to even be fairly sure....it may be 'provincial' with a mishmash of abbreviated latin and Greek legends---but I'm sure others will help out shortly.
If those coins did not have a attribution card, I think he should try to learn how to attribute them.
he had most all the info written down, but two of them were hand written and hard to read. He sort of told me to create this thread, and I was mainly wondering about the date of the one with emperor valentinain.
May I suggest putting the denomination on a separate line by itself? Those who don't know might think "Gallienus Billon Antoninianus" is his full name.
Way to go John for helping to introduce a young new guy to Ancients. Have fun with this Dilly. Being able to identify a coin is very satisfying I find. If you get stuck after trying, post your questions here. You will get lots of help.
nice DD, that ENG is one heck of a guy.. ..also from ENG. he hands out some nice zoo coins! DD, i don't think your coin can be dated any more specifically than the reign of valentinian...but i'm not certain.
DD next time post one at a time, you will get alot of info on your new coin and hopefully learn something about it , where its from, what was there life like and so on. have fun and now give us a book report on each of these guys..
I agree with all and I think ENG just said it best!! And that was VERY cool of you ENG to help DD out that way!! Of course, there are so many ways to research a coin on-line and through various introductory 'hand-books' on Ancients. Have fun Dilly Dollar---it's all a 'labor of Love'...
