I donated two items of my dad's to the Aerospace Museum in San Diego. I expected both would just be in the storage as neither is of much interest to the regular public that would be going to the Museum to see things. But I gave it with the hope that at some point, it might be of use to someone who is researching something or just as an extant relic of an age gone by. One was a large photo that was signed by a bunch of people and the other I believe was a report from the 1950s on some obscure aeronautical plane or drone, I don't remember, but for some reason it got saved by my dad and so 50 or 60 or so years on it was sent there instead of trashing it. If they have some way of cataloging it for use that's great. If they have just done a cursory catalog and stuck it in some box maybe not. As far as museums go, I think it's a hit and miss thing as to how they operate their systems and such. I hear tell of places that take the donations and pretty much just trash them for lack of space. So it always is a good idea to find out if you can what that organization has done before. And many times those museums don't even want stuff they don't already have. My choice for when my dad passed, since these were items that were really esoteric in interest would be to either keep them (nope, didn't want to), keep them with idea of putting on ebay and seeing if someone else wanted them (didn't even want to keep them to do this, sorry), trash them (it was a thought), or gift them to a museum that conceivably might have a use for them or want to keep them. I did that. And if they choose or chose to trash them, it's not my concern.
