This is a strong EF 1857 Flying Eagle Cent. It's nice that the coin is in great shape but the real beauty is the die clash. It's considered scarce as the obverse was clashed with a Liberty Seated Half Dollar.

The clash is strong enough to see a portion of the Liberty Half Dollars obverse on the Flying Eagles obverse. The details are in AMERICA and from the Eagles head to just above the top wing. I had to take the photo on an angle to get it to show but it's a bit stronger in hand. A great error.

It just arrived today and I couldn't wait to post it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. :)

1857 was a crazy year for die clashed Flying Eagle Cents. They came clashed with the dies from the quarter, half and the $20 gold piece.

I was surprised this was available but I now need the others. I'll keep looking.

Not that hard to find but they come at a strong price. There is also the quarter with the FE clash showing. There has not been a half or $20 gold piece found with the clash marks from the FE die. This is the quarter. The clash is on the reverse.

    Very nice. It's easily seen.

I'm trying to imagine the scene at the mint in 1857, as the dies are being set in the press..."oops, wrong reverse, better switch it out, nope still wrong, switch it again" clashing them every time they switched them.

It is difficult to imagine whst actually took place to allow for all of these die clashes, not just of the same coin but different ones, different sizes.

I think that someone was playing with the presses.
