To me, the most marks and the biggest difference between the 1877's was on the ribbon in the reverses. The old has many small ticks and the new one larger tick. I am not sure how you want to evaluate them. To me it was basically a toss up.

Thank you all again - it is a tough choice, honestly. I read each post and took each opinion into account, especially the ones that discussed the flaws. Each coin has its own unique qualities and they are all very different, but they all have really beautiful toning and eye appeal (at least to me). But after examining all the coins in hand and comparing them, and looking at each one's attributes as well as flaws, I have decided to keep the old 1877 and the new 1909-S vdb (though that old svdb is sure going to be hard to part with!). Again, thank you for taking the time to offer your opinions!

The new one on the 1877 - of course the old one is nice also, but I like the color better on the new one. And then the old 09-S VDB - I like the brown better than the other color. Of course, again, both are great coins.

I think that your choices are right, and thanks for posting how you arrived at your decision, it is helpful to those of us who are starting out.

Just remember the old rule of thumb when faced with such things. Twinsies are great!
