The recent Goldberg sale of the March Wells collections had very many choice (and others not so choice, but very rare) varieties of large cents. A deadly trap for people like me who love these coins! I bid on a few 1794's, 1796's and 1795's hoping to get at least one.

In spite of what i considered to be strong bids, over book on R-3 and higher varieties, i did not manage to win even one.......It is as though somebody knew what i was bidding, and continually upped me one! No sign of the difficult economic times at this sale, or maybe it was that people were willing to pay hefty premiums due to the pedigrees. I don't know.

I then chanced to look at what Shawn Yancey was offering. As some of you know, Shawn specializes in this area, and has many nice coppers on offer. There i saw this little lady who now enhances my collection: 1796 Draped Bust S-102, R-4 VG8, with a decent planchet.

S-1-2 is not tremendously rare as a variety, but i think this coin offers a good compromise between rarity and condition. There i saw this little lady who now enhances my collection: 1796 Draped Bust S-102, R-4 VG8, with a decent planchet. S-1-2 is not tremendously rare as a variety, but i think this coin offers a good compromise between rarity and condition. (i already have an S-102 but in AG3/4 condition. This one is much better). I thought some of you may enjoy seeing this lady from 1796, Regards, Eduard
