Around 4 years ago I came across a large box of coins. They were given to my father decades ago by an elderly lady who lived at the Golf resort/hotel where he works. She had been a world traveler in her younger years and would save pocket change after each trip. The coins ranged from Arab, European, Chinese to Canada. One of the coins peaked my curiosity. It was a large 2 1/2 Gulden from the 1930's. I fell in love with the design and history of it. It is dark and has a good amount of green crude on the reverse. This box and this coin really jump started a hobby for me that at the time I did not know existed.

What follows is some of the examples I have collected through the following years. All because of one coin in a junk/pocket box given many years ago. It goes to show you never know what may jump start or spark a connection into this great hobby!

    1848 Willem ll 2 1/2G
    Mintage of 8,333,000

    Willem Frederik George Lodewijk 6 December 1792 – 17 March 1849
Although a Short Reign from 1840 till his death on March 17th 1849, he had a interesting life.
He was known to say "I changed from conservative to liberal in one night."
His reign saw a "New Constitution" in 1848.
That constitution, significantly amended is still in effect today.
He was also in the Battle of Waterloo where he was wounded.
    According to Wiki*
He was blackmailed in 1819 over a letter that presumably contained evidence of bisexuality and a relationship with a "Dandy" *

The only child of Wilhelmina. * Wilhelmina suffered many miscarriages and one stillbirth before finally having Juliana.*
She lived almost 95 years, her 32 year reign saw many ups, downs and scandals. She's noted for her courtesy and kindness.

I don't know much about the different kinds of doubling to say.
I've never seen one with such errors.
The error market is largely by leaps and bounds American coinage. I think the coin is interesting and cool but would bet the interest for such a example would be fairly flat. Nice find though.

Great series of Dutchies! Just need Willem I to complete the set.
One small correction: on your medal "te Amsterdam" does not mean "to Amsterdam" , but "in Amsterdam".

Thank you for the correction. That makes better sense. I have been looking for a l and lll for a while now. I want them to have a little color. Its proving to be difficult but the hunt is half the fun.

My hunt for William lll is over.

    * The New York Times called him "the greatest debauchee of the age"

All Hail King of the Netherlands.....
March 16th 1815 He proclaimed himself "King of the Netherlands"
He abdicated the thrown on October 7 1840
More details and write up to come.

A semi tough coin to find in anywhere near attractive condition. I am super pleased to add this to my collection. This coin has a awesome presence. Unfortunately PCGS has deemed it details cleaned. I find that questionable for sure but i'm not the "Pro".

    1840 2 1/2G PCGS XF Details (Cleaned)
    Mintage of a whopping 44,376

The following coin took a long time to hunt down. I've found that these coins in this year range are very hard to find in a attractive grade. Couple that with trying to find a nicely toned example and the mountain gets taller. Once again i'm super excited to add this to my set. The confetti toning may not set well with some but it shows very nice in hand and fits my set. I was hoping for a Ms63 grade but I think the images show the check Rub much better than in hand so i'm on board with the grade.

    1932 2 1/2 G Normal hair
    PCGS AU58
    mintage of 6,000,000

Finally I sent off a Gold to add to the collection. These are neat coins and can be found Raw for very small premiums over melt at many places.
