Dear all, I am very fond of the early folles of Constantius I and Constantine I from the western mints (London, Trier and Lyon). I like the size of the coins and also the portraits. Ofcourse the genius reverse can be considdered A little bit boring some. I was very happy to win this coin drom Lyon as it is from a very small issue, issues just before the invasion coinage was produced. I don’t have the numbers but i do not think that there are many coins with this Mintmark around. Constantius I Caesar, 293-305. Follis Lyon circa 295-296, Æ 26.9mm., 11.72g. Laureate bust r. Rev. Genius standing l., holding patera and cornucopia; in exergue, PLB. RIC 13a. About Very Fine/Very Fine. Ex Baldwin's.
A nice addition, Adriaan. CONSTANTIUS I Æ Follis O.: CONSTANTIVS NOB CES; Laureate head right. R.: SALVIS AVGG ET CAESS FEL KART; Carthago standing facing, head left, holding fruits in both hands // Γ Carthage mint, 298-299 A.D. 8.4g 31mm RIC VI 30a, p. 427 Constantius I (305 - 306 A.D.) Egypt, Alexandria Potin Tetradrachm O: ΦΛA KωNCTANTIOC K, laureate bust right. R: Homonoia standing left, raising arm and holding cornucopia, L Γ = year 3 (294/295) 8.43g 19mm Kampmann/Ganschow 121.24, Dattari 6070 Emmett 4191.2
Very nice! Here is my only one: Constantius I as Caesar, AD 293-305 Æ Follis, 29mm, 9.6g, 12h; Trier mint, AD 303 Obv.: CONSTANTIVS NOBIL C, laureate and cuirassed bust right / Rev.: GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI, Genius standing left, wearing modius on head, holding patera and cornucopiae; S-F In Ex.: ITR
I was tracking that one too... a very rare issue! I'm sure @jamesicus would like to see it. Here's my matching invasion follis:
Here’s mine from Ticinum Constantius I as Caesar AD 293-305. Ticinum, Follis Æ 25mm., 10.48g. CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES, laureate head right / GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left, modius on head, chlamys over shoulder, holding patera and cornucopia, mintmark T. RIC VI Ticinum 24a.
Here are my two Constantius I, first is GENIO.POPV-LI.ROMANI struck in Antioch, second is SACRA.MON.VRB.AVGG.ET.CAESS.NN.
@Andres2: I agree it is PLA in the exergue! However, RIC does not mention officina A for RIC 13a (only B). Does this mean that the attribution is incorrect or is it just an unrecorded variety? Does anybody know if it is Bastien (I don't have that book)? THank you!
Some nice example shown in this thread. Here are a couple from my collection: CONSTANTIUS I AE Follis OBVERSE: CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES, Laurate bust, right REVERSE: SAC MON VRB AVGG ET CAESS NN, Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae. Star in right field. Mintmark RT Struck at Rome 302-303 AD 8.8g, 27mm RIC VI 106a CONSTANTIUS I AE Follis OBVERSE: CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES, laureate head right (large head type) REVERSE: SALVIS AVGG ET CAESS FEL KART, Carthago standing facing, head left, in long robe, holding fruits in both hands. Mintmark Gamma Struck at Carthage 298-299 AD 7.41g, 28mm RIC VI 32a This next one I should probably clean up, but I'm afraid I might mess up the patina. The reverse has some very nice detail. CONSTANTIUS I AE Follis or Nummus OBVERSE: IMP C CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, laureate head right REVERSE: FIDES MI-LITVM ("The loyalty of the military"), Fides enthroned holding a scepter in right hand and a military Ensign of the left hand; pellet right in field; TT in ex. Struck at Ticinum 305-306 AD 9.15g, 28mm RIC VI 55a; Sear 14170
