You are much like I. My collection is a hodgepodge of coins. I am a low budget collector as well. I do most of my buying on eBay. I live in a small town in Maine and the Coin Dealer here is very nice his inventory is rather on the high side. I was buying a bunch of stuff not know what I was doing. I finally, after learning a lot of what I bought had been cleaned and worthless started learning a little.

I am extremely leery of buying a raw coin on eBay now as I am not experienced enough to be sure it is not a cleaned coin. So I started looking at the graded coins. They are very shiny lol. Kind of like seeing a squirrel they got me. As you said, one can pick them up for reasonable prices. The coins are beautiful and it is fun to collect them. I have been going for many of them. Not just nickels.

I mostly go for America the Beautiful series and the State Quarters. I try to be patient and place my max bid and if I win wonderful, if not I try again. I also have collected some pennies, nickels, dimes and regular quarters. I like to get them is silver if I can find them affordable. I have had better luck getting them in silver than I expected.

It has helped me a great deal focusing somewhat on an area and has made it more fun. I am a disabled veteran and a bit older so I know about the budget too. I think that makes it fun as well. The challenge to get what you want exists. I think that just being able to buy everything on a whim would take the excitement out of it.

Anyways, I just noticed I wrote a book, sorry.

Have fun all,

Brad
