When get a new cent chances are it's going to be even uglier than the Washington dollar. I'd keep the one we have.

I agree that Miss Liberty should come back to circulated coins. She should be depicted in various interpretations by different artists. Personally, I love the different eagle variations and prefer animal pictures over humans. You've gotta admit that the Buffalo design on a nickle and the gold bullion coin are stunning.

How boring it would be to have a liberty head on all of the coins ...so bland and BORING. Whatever coin you make there will be hundreds of thousands that want something else. You can't please everyone....so you gotta please yourself. If you don't like them...don't collect them. They will be collected by those that do like them.

Personally I was bored to tears with the peace dollars, the walking liberty series, the standing liberty series, the entire barber series ! [snicker snicker] The St. Gauden's designs and Bela Lyon Pratt's indians (based on liberty) were so bland.

I personally couldn't disagree more, although I will defend part of your point that we do NOT need to return to what we used to have on coins, but rather bring new designs. What I think everyone else may be thinking is not so much a return to the past as much as a return to the medallic art that was so prominent on our coinage from almost the very beginnings of our mint. I also think that the general public is ready for a departure from the dead president theme, but I am unsure if the subject is as much an issue as the design.

    just my 2 ¢

i don't think all the coins should have people on it, why not two animals or other images other than people

Put a head of an animal on one side, the rear of the animal on the other side, and finally settle the mystery of heads and tails. :D

I voted "yes" for Ms. Liberty, but with a codicil.

I don't think we should rehash old versions of Liberty. Nor do I think we should use the same new version for each design. I also don't think we should get rid of famous people on our coins. That being said, our political climate right isn't conducive to making good choices for the way Ms. Liberty or the famous people would be represented. Both parties are far too likely to put their favorite politicians, rather than the most deserving Americans. So, ultimately, I think that we should be stuck with the same old boring designs for a while longer. Remember what happened last time we were in this situation (about a hundred years ago). We got some pretty good designs then.

Sort of. I love the liberty designs, but I also really like the washingtion quarter for some reason.

Nah, put the rear of the donkey on one side and the rear of the elephant on the other.
This way the coins would represent the way that most people feel about their politicians.

I like your idea, Other Frank!

If there's enough demand for this, I think the Mint will in fact cave in and...

...mint even more commemoratives with the old designs, in multiple sizes...

As for circulating coins, as much as a nice idea as this could be, I don't think we'll see it. I too would be really concerned about the design.

And DJ, congratulations on being published! Be careful, though, it can be addicting...

Time for me to chime in...

I wholeheartedly agree that modern coinage is ugly. But I don't quite think returning to the old designs is a good idea. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE seated liberty/shield coinage. But, take a look at the reverses of the San Fransisco Old Mint commemoratives. Something just seems... wrong with them.

I think that a great idea for a new dollar coin would be to rework the 1987 Constitution 5$ gold commem. into a dollar about the size/weight of the British pound.

    by the way... CONGRATS!

It is! I've been racking my brain for another issue I have that I want to write about but so far none have come to mind. Gonna keep thinking tho.

I agree. I don't want old designs rehashed...I think it's time for some new depictions of Lady Liberty and some new eagle reverses.
    Thanks!
