Earlier this week I visited my LCS and spent a few hours blissfully looking through unsorted world coins. I came home with a few hundred, but here's the ones I wanted to share for various reasons. I haven't done any research on any of these yet so for some I don't have all the info yet. Netherlands East Indies 1 duit (I think) 1748. Probably not rare but I like coins from this territory. 1766 Portugal (or Azores?) 5 reis. 1794 Conder half penny token. John Wilkinson Iron Master. I see it has some stuff on it I need to scrape off. It looks like it should come off easily. 1799 Great Britain farthing. I actually got two of these. I already have one so I'll keep whichever is in the best shape. This one is pretty nice for its age though and you don't see the old farthings as much. 1838 Great Britain 2 pence. Not sure if this is Maudy money so I have to check that. 1843 New Brunswick half penny token. I like these Canadian pre-confederation tokens and this one is in great shape. I don't see New Brunswick too often so hopefully this turns out to be worth something. 1855 B France 10 centimes. These are common but I included it because it's in better condition than they usually are. 1867 Spain 1 escudo. This is a type I did not previously have and I'm curious to look it up. I don't think the escudo was used for long in Spain, though it was used in Portugal later. 1872 H Newfoundland 1 cent. This one is in really nice condition. 1897 Sweden 2 kronor. I had one already but this one is in great condition.
Here's part 2: 1910 F Germany 25 pfennig. This is not a denomination that you see too often. 1923 Westfalen (Germany) 50 million marks. Notgeld produced during the peak of the inflationary period after WWI. This is also a big coin, about the size of a dollar. 1923 Westfalen 100 mark. Perhaps produced when the inflation wasn't quite so bad. 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition token. I'm not a token collector but I thought it was neat. 1948 Einhorn's token. Again, I don't collect these but it was neat. 1958 Canada 1 dollar British Columbia commemorative. Nice condition, silver, weird statue (totem pole?) - what's not to like? 1962 Panama quarter balboa. Great condition. 1974 Tanzania 50 shilingi. This goes in my animals collection. 1995 Netherlands 2 1/2 ecu. Not an official coin as far as I know but it was a curiosity. Pidcock's Exhibition token. I assume this is a Conder token. It's the size of a farthing, which I don't usually see in these. I'm curious to learn more.
That Einhorn token is pretty neat. Made me think of Ace Ventura! Thought I had the same Napolean the third, but it is a 1857 A Cino Centimes.
Love that Pidcock conder token! I have one (not photographed) with the toucan/two-headed bull die pairing. They seem pretty popular, as conder tokens go -- especially the ones with elephants, if price is any indication.
Yeah after I posted this I looked that up and saw some on eBay with people asking $200. Even if that's high I think I did great on it. Plus I collect elephant coins.
Yes, it's a totem pole. There are a bunch of them in Stanley Park in Vancouver. I have a 1958 PL set here somewhere. "This 1-dollar silver coin is also called the Death dollar. At the bottom of the totem pole on reverse, Stephan Trenka, designer for this commemorative coin, added a face that is the symbol of death in the First Nations culture."
That 1838 UK 2d is almost certainly a colonial issue rather than Maundy. They were minted for general circulation in a few years.
Within the Conder series the Pidcock tokens are extremely popular. They don't sit for very long in a dealer's inventory.
Yes, a totem pole. My neck of the woods. I recently stopped by one of my LCS and found they do not have the bin to look through anymore.
I called all the shops in the area and very few carry world coins. So many of them really are just out to buy and sell precious metals.
