The case demonstrates a problem common in the hobby. When you make a case or buy a blue paper folder, do you leave space for coins that will probably never be added to the collection or that may not even exist in the market. I can only wish that the beautiful case will cause you the problem of discovering another variety that was previously unknown to the hobby or that you never dreamed would be found. Such a 'problem' we can tolerate. https://coinweek.com/ancient-coins/coinweek-ancient-coin-series-mark-antonys-legionary-denarius/
My link above makes the statement: "There are coins with obvious errors like “IIX” for “XII”." I'd like to see their proof that IIX is an error for 12 and not a double subtractive 8. There is a Tiberius with 38 rendered XXIIX so I'd be careful not to make assumptions on what was in the head of the engraver. To me the real treasure would be the LEG blank coin they showed. Of course it would have to be a high grade one to show there never was a numeral.
Actually, I am missing 3 for the display case but 5 total. Two I did not have included in the display case: Legio IIX and Legio XVIIII. Both are very rare. The last 3 for the display case are: Legio IIII; Legio XVII Classicae; and Chort Praetoria. I would ask my CT family to keep an eye out for these three and let me know if you find one for sale. No Legio I and both Legio IV and IX were reflected in the different formats of Legio IIII and VIIII.
What a wonderful display cabinet! The workmanship is lovely, and I agree, worth waiting an extra 3 months for. Could you post the name and contact info for the artist? I can think of some coins I might like a display for.
What a wonderful gift - from a great son - Bing. It is a beautifully crafted case that I know you will treasure for the rest of your life.
The display case just arrived a little while ago. It's as nice as the image I posted. Once I have it populated, I will post another image. For those of you interested, the maker of the case is Jim Barbour. He can be contacted via his website: http://shopdogturnery.com or his email jim@shopdogturnery.com
On reading the title to this thread, my first though was "I am sorry to hear about the passing of your Christmas gift." I see that I took it the wrong way, very nice display case!
