You did not cause any hassle to anybody Jack. Absolutely none !

Nope. But every member, when they register, they have to agree to the Terms Of Service. And the Terms Of Service state that you give CT the right to use any post you make on the forum. But the only way CT ever "uses" any post is by having it here on the forum. And this TOS is pretty much standard with any and every forum anyone ever joins.

No, not from CT anyway. Ya see, in that regard CT is no different than a magazine. When you join the forum you give CT written permission to use what you write here, and to use what pics you post here. But you, as the author, still own the copyright to everything you ever write here, and every picture you ever post here.

And by the same token the members are the ones who are responsible for what they post here. In other words, if the members do something wrong by posting/writing what they do, it is the member who will suffer the legal consequences - not CT.

Well...all that being said....why is Jack upset? Something isn't lining up.

I am upset with myself; the article in question was written partially from my input and I lost sight of the fact it wasn't mine.

I write summary articles on my and my Team's research on the recent deceptive counterfeits; I use this forum and another close group I have as a sounding board and post some of the research in both forums counting on others in both to respond with their thoughts- I have a lot of faith in many of the Members here to share both positive and helpful (criticism) thoughts going forward.

I became concerned that posting that here would be a concern completing my article due to any "copyright" situation here or posting any images from my published article on Coin Week, etc here...

Jack, I'm being facetious here. You know the expression, 'you're being too hard on yourself'? Of course you do. Well it seems to apply in this case, to quite a high degree no less.

It appears very apparent that not only are your fellow members here on CT unmoved by your ever so slight transgression, but so are the mods.

Forget about the need for any penitence, not even a hail Cesar is necessary. ;)

Coin talk isn't my forum, so they can do whatever they like with it and what is or isn't acceptable but a judge is more likely to make a determination of fair use if the defendant's use is noncommercial, educational, scientific, or historical purposes.

As far as me personally, its non-commercial, usually educational, scientific, or historic, but I don't know if Coin talk could say the same, I assume the website must generate some sort of revenue from traffic, so postings on the site by a 3rd party could be seen as commercial use for the site itself.

We all know it's a litigious world out there, people get copyright tagged on youtube every second of the day by bots looking for it in order to make a claim and get the revenue from the videos and commercials.

For the most part I'll normally post a link to an article and post a headline and give an overview on what it's about. I won't even bother doing this if access to the article isn't free. I'm not going to send you guys to subscription sites. LOL
All of that is fair use but it doesn't mean a bot out there isn't going to tag it and make a claim and unless you like court, most folks immediately take it down and desist just from a simple claim, or have rules barring it from happening and policing their site to avoid it.

it's really not a big deal, and it's bound to happen with user generated content. As long as the site is removing it and desisting when a claim is made, it's fine. I have NO earthly idea why a writer or musician, or photographer wouldn't want their creations to get in the most eyes and ears possible, but I do understand they gotta make a living somehow also and if it's too freely available, they don't make money.

Everything is copyrighted the moment it is created, you'd have to register a copyright in order to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a copyright though, but literally any and all original work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that can be seen or heard directly or with the aid of a machine or device indirectly. Registration of a copyright is voluntary and not necessary to make a claim but necessary for a lawsuit.

in my opinion, it's mostly a shakedown looking to get into someone pocket due to many honest to goodness fair use reasons, but in some cases it's legit claims.

Oh, so that's what the fuss is. So help me understand the title of this thread, "My last post here and apology for my previous one..." I guess I'm not understanding how that follows from your cooperation in the taking down of the copyrighted material. You know, I have to tell you, people learn from my input, too. Probably not a whole lot of people, but some do. Hell, I've been here listening to the likes of Doug talk, since 2006, I ought to know something. But that's to say, this can happen to any of us. I'm not going to throw the towel in and leave here for it. Are you understanding? We're all in the same boat. It's a result of, to borrow from Doug, having knowledge and sharing it. That's all. It's how it works...
