Just added this Yüzlük (100 paras) of Selīm III, Istanbul mint. 1789-1807 Bought from Poinsignon on Ma-shops. This would be my largest non-bullion silver coin at 33.14 g, although only 50% pure. and thanks to @Marsyas Mike for introducing me to this coin! Penny for scale, and the tiny coin is an Akce of Mehmed II, 1471 AD.
That's beautiful - great detail. I love old silver. I had to pick this up here from a fellow CTalker :
Lovely coin. My largest is a modern Currency Balboa (1904-date) Composition Silver (.925) Weight 129.59 g Diameter 61 mm Thickness 4.7 mm
Both the Ottoman and Samanid coins are neat and have interesting histories. I also have a Samanid multiple dirham coin. Samanid Multiple Dirham Nuh II Kurat (No date) Silver, 44 mm, 11.17 gm Ruler: This coin was minted under the rule of Emir Nuh II whose reign was AH 365 to 387 (AD 976-997). Mint: Kurat, located near Fayzabad, Badakhshan province, northeast Afghanistan These coins, called multiple dirhams, were minted in the 10th century AD in northeast Afghanistan in an area located on the north slopes of the Hindu Kush mountains where a lot of silver was discovered and mined. A situation developed similar to the 1850's when the US mints began minting larger size gold coins to accommodate the gold coming from California. The ultimate customer for these coins were the Scandinavian Vikings via Russian trading posts, and large hoards of Samanid dirhams have been found in Sweden and Norway.
