Eduard, I started collecting world gold coins with no particuliar focus. It wasn't until about 6 months after I started collecting (and 10 gold coins or so) that I saw this unbelievable coin here at Cointalk ..... a Flanders Franc a' Cheval in MS64 belonging to GDJMSP. (sorry for small photos can't seem to enlarge them) That coin sparked my interest not only because of its beauty but the fact that it was hand struck. When I asked Doug for information on the coin and from our numerous communications via emails, photos, website and book references, etc, he formally introduced me to gold coins of the Low Countries. From that day forward I was hooked on both the coins and the history of that region. I began (and continue) collecting ducats, 7 & 14 Gulden, 6 stuivers, Real d'or, Brabant- Pieter D'or , reference books, and yes Flanders -Louis de Maele coins. The series of gold minted under his rule is some of the most unique and beautiful gold coins ever minted in history. I now have three of the seven major types minted under his rule. Cavalier d'or (Franc a' Cheval) Chaise d'or au lion Lion heaume' d'or So I credit Doug as the single most influencing factor in sparking my initial interest and mentoring me in my continual interest and love for coins of Low Countries/ Belguim/Netherlands ..... Thanks for Sharing Your Knowledge ;) !!
