Nice post. It was the SLQs the got me into the hobby some 30 years ago. To me, it is the most beautiful and symbolic coin ever produced in the US. The eagle in full flight, the meaning of the wall, gate, shield, wondering what Miss Liberty was viewing to her left. I joined an SLQ club in the mid 1990's that produced a publication called McNeill's Notes but they ceased to exist after a few years. I still have all of these publications. I agree with those of you who argue AU58 is the best choice for a collection - a balance of economy and quality. I have a collection in this grade but I believe the 1916 will be forever beyond my reach.
I have the gold version of the SLQ as well. While it is beautiful I wish it would have been more sharply struck.
Nice, honest coin. Love the SLQ and have a few. I started to build a collection of them, but got sidetracked by Buffalo nickels. Maybe I'll get back to the quarters soon.
Its a beautiful design. Unfortunately, the luster is broken and under a glass, you can see it was cleaned sometime in the past. I may still send it for encapsulation but not interested in a "details" label. Nearly all of the ones I find have worked hard during their lifetimes.
