Just picked up my second Arcadius Solidus this month from Gorny & Mosch Auction yesterday. AV Solidus ND struck circa 393-95 AD Sirmium Mint in Serbia 4.46g. 23mm. stempelglanz=MS Pearl-diademed/draped/ ciurassed bust right DN ARCADI-VS PFAVG Emperor standing right/ holding standard/ globe surmounted by Victory/ foot on captive VICTORI-A AVGGG.H S-M Sirmium Mint RICIX 15(b) C Depeyrot 34/1 Weak Emperor who was told what to do by his wife/ chief advisors and Alaric.
Weak emperor; strong strike; excellent type. IMO this is a gold coin with more going for it than being gold. Really, though, someone could explain the H after AVGGG. It appears Sirmium was using eight officina for gold striking gold only at that time. Educational.
Today, was my first day off work since June 12th. We had a total rainout....so my loving wife made me do housework all day! I guess, she and my clientelle think I am one their slaves.... Back to coins, yeah I ended up with 2 examples of Arcadius Solidi/ one really nice one from Roma/ and this one from Gorny&Mosch. Now, I will have to get a Solidus from Arcadius spouse Aelia Eudoxia!
