    If you find something that can be used to make a parallel to the (early) middle ages, you'd have a very interesting article to be written about it.

    ...I'm sure I've seen other examples, at least in manuscript. It's really a pretty intuitive transition; the motif presumably made it to late Classical manuscripts as well, which would have been the natural starting point and inspiration of stuff in the same medium from the Carolingian period onward.
