Hey everyone, What’s up? I just bought my first coin of the year and we’re only 3/4 of the way through! This is a coin that has been in my wish list for a while. It’s a must for my sub collection of Roman coins with Christian symbols. It’s a bit beat up, but I couldn’t beat the price! It’s from our good friend, @Valentinian. Thanks! Here it is, the Magnentius Chi Rho: I kind of want to attempt to clean up the Alpha symbol a bit, but I have absolutely no experience and don’t want to damage the coin anymore. Any suggestions? As always, feel free to post anything that’s IRRELEVANT and RANDOM! Erin
Nice! Suggestion: Don't clean it. It has that "cool look" & "honest" factors going for it. Wonder how it lost that chunk (I like it!)? Btw, just last week I received my first coin for this year (a beautiful Apollo 11 commemorative $1), & I'm OK with that!
Well done, Erin!!! Great coin for your sub-collection! LOL Blue APPROVES !!! O, very kool Erin! ..ain't that Warren just a kool dude...i have one o'em but its the 2 angels on the rear type...
Way to get after your first pick up! How about something relevant and intentional? Magentius, AD 350-353 AE, 23mm, 4.72g; 12h Obv.: [DN MAGEN]-TIVS PF A[VG] Rev.: [SAL]VS DD NN A[VG ET CAAES]; Large Chi-Rho with A to left, W right For me, the last couple years have been pretty slow, 2017 I only purchased twenty coins and 2018 was ten . And this year has been slow as well, I'm up to 16. But there have been some nice coins in there! How about a new one? It's pretty unrelated. SPAIN, Bolskan (Osca). Circa 150-100 BC. AR Denarius, 18mm, 3.7 gm, 2h. Obv.: Male head right; Iberian 'bon' behind. Rev.: Horseman holding spear right, Iberian 'bolskan' below.
I like that green color @Jwt708 ! Shame about the scratches. Still a cool coin Oh, and the other one is nice too...
The Magentius has a sharp edge where the flan is...cracked...chipped? It's hard to see because of the shadow. I should re-image it. The Bolskan picture does not do the coin enough justice, it has very deep relief.
Historical coin with a lovely patina, Erin! I still don't have one of these giant chi-rho coins. I'm in the same boat as @ominus1 and @Cucumbor . I just have the two victories reverse type -- but with a chi-rho on top -- courtesy of @John Anthony: Magnentius, AD 350-353. Roman billon heavy maiorina, 4.68 g, 20.1 mm, 6h. Arles, AD 352. Way to get on the coin score board for 2019 with a cool chi rho @Johndakerftw ! A large chi rho reverse has been on my list for years! Here one of mine with a small chi rho on the banner.
Thanks everybody! Sweet coinage, as usual! I was getting nervous about whether or not I was going to make it on the purchasing board. @ominus1 gifted me some sweet coins a few months ago. So, even if I didn't buy the Chi Rho, I would end the year empty of new coins. I'm still mind boggled that I was able to get this coin at the price I got it. All of the others I saw were way out of my price range. I appreciate the clarity of the Chi Rho and the Omega symbol. I don't think I'll attempt to clean up the Alpha, I would probably end up scratching the coin. We all know it's there, so that's good enough. Keep up the good work, all! Erin
