Kind o' like selling your children, right Bruce? Just can't bring yourself to doin' it. I know the feeling.....
I missed that tidbit didn't I? Both the 1935-S and the 1927 are PCGS slabbed. I don't yet have the knowledge or the faith in buying online to buy raw, so the plan is to collect the whole series in PCGS MS64. Funny, I was looking through my spreadsheets just now and realized that I'm working backwards through the dollars for some reason. Totally unplanned. First it was a complete set of proof and burnished Silver Eagles (all in OGP) along with the bullion versions in MS69. I have the Presidential dollars to date in proof sets (also OGP) and the Sacagawea, Susan B. Anthony, and Eisenhower dollar proofs all in PR69 DCAM. Now I've started on the Peace dollars. I must have a thing for dollars! Maybe I'll Ebay the Jefferson nickel proofs and Kennedy half proofs to concentrate on what is apparently my true love.
Thank-you Bruce, I thought it was just me! I have four Kennedy half proofs and a couple of silver eagle proofs that I upgraded as they were slightly toned, but I couldn't sell them either. At least I know I'm not alone.
I'm starting on Morgans, then... well, I dunno. Dollars sure are fun, especially the big silver ones. I do love me some Merc Dimes, though, obviously.
There's something about a mercury dime thst you just cant get enough of! Love merc's but i love my morgans!
I'm only doing a year set of Morgans and putting off the big years for later... not in my budget... will probably have to do the same with Merc dimes unless I start making a lotta money soon haha.
I'm hoping the Peace dollars take me enough years that I don't even contemplate trying to put together a high grade complete set of Morgans! I have a couple that I bought raw for play money, and they're beautiful coins. Way pricey in the key dates though. Just the 1892-S and 1893-S would cost more than my house is worth LOL.
A cheap alternative to those key dates is buying replicas to fill the holes... I have an AU-BU date/mint mark set of morgans and wouldnt trade them for very many things in this world! Probably my most prized possesion i own!
MS63 set with examples in Ms, PL and DMPL from each mint comes out to around $12k, if you work with a solid budget... that's what I'm aiming for. Hoping to have the set done in 3 years time. The price jump from 63 to 64 is pretty big, though, and I could understand if you didn't wanna do a set in 63... Just means less competition for me.
That would be a sight worth seeing, truly. Hopefully there will be plenty of pictures when you do it! I'm already dreading the distant day when I fork over $4-5K for a 1934-S in MS64. I was a little - how can I put this nicely - nauseous when I hit the button for the 1995 10th Anniversary Eagle proof set. Would take a lot to pry it out of my hands now though as it's the centerpiece for the ASE collection. Strange hobby this, and hard to explain to other people why you'd pay so much for something with a nominal value of a dollar.
