I agree. Though here the poster of that question is 12 so they probably don't know any better.

In that general part of the world, belching , farting etc are not viewed as 'impolite' or offensive as they are to us......that was true decades ago and appears, somewhat surprising to me, still acceptable in public...Go figure.

I did not know that. The movie reference may be lost on him as well.

My grasp of the situation was that the younger generation was more concerned, particularly the women. However, I should not be taken as an expert on Korean culture. Another friend of mine had family there. He went to their house for a Korean holiday simliar to our Thanksgiving and he had a few amusing stories.

Boy, I'm tempted to bust her out so I can hold her... probably won't happen anytime soon though, lol. jw13.jpg

For the love of "whomever" crack that thing. DO NOT let people scare you off. Handling that coin WILL NOT lower it's grade by any means. IF it reduces the price by some insignificant amount because it cost money to have it slabbed originally...............WHO cares? The price of that slab is a dinner out one night. Handle your coin. Life is short.

I busted out a graded US gold piece so I could handle it. At au-55, I can handle it as much as I want and reslab it for a pittance really if needed. I would not have bought it if I thought it had to stay in the slab. You won't need to re-slab yours..if you ever wanted to sell it. It's an ancient. Keep the label if you want. The coin photo will always be on-line in their registry.

De-Slab your ancient. It is the right thing to do.

We need a forum break-out party for that coin. Pick a date and time, start a thread, show a pre-break picture of the slabs and tools, a picture of the cracked slab, and then one of the freed coin in your hand. We'll cheer right along as the pictures and posts documenting your progress start flowing in. Do it!

Nice pickup J. I have t cracked anything out in a little bit now (since I haven't bought anything new in a while :() but man is it exhilarating and highly recommended. For the record, I have quite a bit a respect for what the grading companies have done for the hobby for better or worse, but I figure once you're educated enough in your hobby not to need them that the slab isn't very necessary.

Some of you guys must not know me, haha. All of my ancients are graded, except for the first one I bought, which turned out to be a fake. This will probably stay graded :) I HAVE busted plenty of $2 1/2 golds out though over the years, so do have plenty of practice!

If you use that analogy... I will go with it. Which one is worth more now?? Opened and used, or in container? I agree opened is more fun though

Unlike a US coin that might be worth $5000 if encased in a plastic slab from PCGS, but which will decrease in value to $4,000 if cracked from the slab (even if the coin is otherwise unmolested), and decrease further to $3,500 if you so much as accidentally touch it...your ancient coin is worth the same to us in the slab, outside the slab, etc.

Your ancient coin is not a proof strike, or uncirculated. It is a coin that was in the ground for 2,000 years undergoing chemical reactions with the soil, and was then pulled from the ground and cleaned. There is no mint luster or a perfect little surface to protect. It won't melt because you touch it, and it certainly won't decrease any in value.

Anyway, suit yourself...you like plastic, keep the plastic. It's your coin. But I'm just going to give you the Dustin Hoffman stare when I hear about the "plastic." ;)

My wife got a new ipod touch (I know, no iphones here, we are old school!) and it takes pretty nice pics. Here is a new pic of her (the coin, not the wife!)
