I bought another one yesterday for a Kings and Queens of England set I'm slowly working at. It will be a decades long project.

HENRY VII 1485-1509 HALFGROAT Canterbury mint.

Very nice Shernan - I'll admit I'm trying to do the same with pennies, but need to catch up on some of the modern issues before I tackle the Monarchs (I was forced to take a several year hiatus from collecting for financial reasons...).

Which Henry is that coin? Henry IV Groat?

It's a Henry VII halfgroat from the Canterbury mint.

What year did England start putting dates on coins?

The reign of Edward VI (1547-53) can be consistently dated by mintmarks - actual dates show up in the joint reign of Mary and Philip (1554-58), but I don't think dates become a regular and consistent feature until milled coins (1662)

    Nice Bury mint penny.
I live 7 miles away from where it was minted.
BTW Spink is very loose and a basic guide to hammered.
There are specialised books for the keen collector.

If you need some other books to look at I can help you out if you still are interested. There are a few decent online resources, however, more detailed studies and books are available (generally from overseas) that provide much more detail.

Here is a very good place to start online...and its free!

Very cool Coin Wyvern! I specialize in Edward pennies and this is actually a coin minted during Edward II reign. The coin is of class 12a and minted between 1314 and 1317. The unique design of the crowns seen in class 12a are unlike that in any other class of early Edwardian pennies.

The central fleur in the crown is referred to as a "strawberry leaf" rather than the normal tri-foliate fleur. These don't crop up very often so a really cool example of and Edwardian penny! Congrats on the great coin!

If you have any other hammered pennies, I would love to see them! :)
