I RARELY post prior to receiving the coin. BUT, this one was such a unique "gift" to win...!!!

@ancientcoinguru : nice coin! BTW the double axes/labrys is an interesting symbol (coming from Crete/the Minoan civilization).

@Carausius : stunning coin! I'd love to have such coin in my collection but don't know where I could put it... or have to buy a new coin cabinet.

@Carausius , that is indeed a beautiful aes grave, one of the very best I have seen of that type! Congratulations!

My undergraduate degree was in classical archaeology, with a focus on Minoan studies...so this coin was a "must have" for me! I am always on the lookout for ancients with a labrys.:)

I had one in my collection (one of my first coins) from Thyateira but I sold it...

It seems that I am not the only one here with a background in classical studies :)
I got my graduated degree in Ancient Greek History. But it was a long time ago...

@ancientone: very interesting coin! I've never seen it before. It' is a pity that you sold it...
I've downloaded the article of the SNR and will read it this weekend :bookworm::bookworm::bookworm:

Carausius Brother, can you spare a sestertius?

I'm another. My degree was in ancient history and classical civilization. I would likely have been a classics major, if there were no Latin and Greek proficiency requirements!

I'm pursuing a History degree, focusing on Early Europe.

I don't see how else to do it other than get a new cabinet!:D

My coins are stored in Abafil trays. For Aes Grave, I use the "deep" Abafil trays - they are double the depth of a normal tray.

Check out this article on Etruscan coinage from Schweizerische numismatische Rundschau (SNR). I have not read it all myself but thought some might be interested.
