I went to the Annapolis coin show today with my son. We have only been to the Baltimore Whitman show before. I met my first fellow CTer @Paddy54 who was kind enough to gift my son some beautiful proof nickels and a nice token from the Gettysburg show that we wanted to go to but weren't able. My son was really shy but on the ride home he couldn't stop talking about how shiny those nickels were! Thanks Paddy Well there was one ancient dealer there and he had some pretty cool pieces. All well out of my price range. He then pulled out an envelope that had a few of his "not as nice" specimens. I picked out these 2 coins mainly for the portraits. I thought they are pretty nice. I paid $35 for the 2 coins together and I'm honestly not sure if that is a good price or not. But again, I liked the portraits and these are the 2 biggest ancients I have in my collection Tell me what you think! Marcus Aurelius. Sestertius. 175-176 AD M ANTONINVS AVG GERM SARMATICVS, laureate head right TR P XXX IMP VIII COS III SC, Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae Trajan, As That is the most I have been able to ID on this one. I'm having a lot of trouble with it.
https://www.acsearch.info/search.ht...s=1&thesaurus=1&order=0¤cy=usd&company= The question is do I see wings or imagine them?
Nice, @furryfrog02! I'd say you got what you paid, and especially since you enjoy them! I actually just picked up that same Trajan As, Victory flying left with shield, SPQR on shield.
When we think we see something that makes the coin the common variety (Victory), it is probably true that we are not imagining them. When we think we see something that makes a coin a great rarity, we are probably imagining it. Here the shield is pretty obvious and too high to be an altar that would be on another common type so I believe the Victory type is 95% likely to be correct.
Thanks everyone After the hint about the wings I went back to wildwinds and found all the ones that have Victory and the shield. Mine is definitely one of those. Though beyond that, as @iamtiberius said, I'm gonna need a lot of luck haha.
I can see faintly COS II but beyond that I can't tell for sure if there is another "I" or "P P". Man, you guys are really good!
It might just be sifting through the 100+ similar examples on ACSearch hunting for a reverse die match... What are unique traits to look for...? Yours has one wing that appears before the head, and one after; yours has a shield that is vertically aligned with the T in TR; pay attention to the location/distance between the shield and the T (its not really close like some are, but not far away); location of the right wing to the C in COS; location of the S & C relative to Victory, her wings, and the legend. Tedious? A little... Fun? Moderately yes... Rewarding when you find one? YESSS!!!
