My First Aurelian!

    Aurelian is fun to collect; even with my relatively narrow collecting focus, I couldn't choose just one!

    Early pre-reform ant, Rome mint, the sort of coin that made Aurelian bring down the ban hammer on Felicissimus

    And one of the last pre-reform bronze coins ever made before the Tetrarchy... either an As or an extremely reduced Sestertius (about 24mm and 7g)

    Billion Coin (AE Antoninianus) minted at Cyzicus during the reign of AURELIAN between 272 – 275 A.D. Obv. IMP.C.AVRELIANVS.AVG.; Rad., dr. & cuir. bust r. Rev. ORIENS.AVG. Sol stg. head l., r. hand raised, l. holding globe, two captives at his feet, in ex. A C RCS #153. RICV #363. DVM #14.

VABALATHVS.V.C.R.IM.D.R.: laur., dr. and cuir. bust, r., (these were struck during the uneasy peace between Rome and Palmyra immediately following the accession of AURELIAN. The letters V.C.R.IM.D.R. seem to = VIR CLARISSIMUS REX IMPERATOR DUX ROMANORUM.) Rev. IMP.C.AVRELIANVS.AVG.: rad. and cuir. bust of AURELIAN r. RCS #3292. RICV #381 pg.308. DVM #1.

    Obv:– IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG, Laureate, cuirassed bust right
    Rev:– VICTORIA AVG, Victory walking left, holding wreath and palm.
    Minted in Rome, (B _ //VSV). Allocated by Estiot to Emission 10 dating to end A.D. 274.
    Reference:– Paris-185, Gobl-135f2 (9 spec.), RIC-71, C-250 (Elberling, 6 Fr.).
    Virtually fully silvered , a good strike, well centred and not showing much evidence of wear

    Rev:– PACATOR ORBIS, Sol walking left, right hand raised, left hand holding whip
    Minted in Lugdunum, (//.A.L.). Emission 3, Officina 1. mid A.D. 275
    Reference:– Bastien 7 (17 examples cited). RIC 6 Bust Type F

    Obv:– IMP AVRELIANVS AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right
    Rev:– MARS INVICTVS, Mars, naked, holding spear, standing right receiving globe from Sol, standing left holding whip in left hand
    Minted in Cyzicus mint, 10th emission, officina 3; start to mid 275 CE. (G // XXI).
    Reference:– RIC 357 Bust Type F. La Venera 10718. Estiot RIC temp #3076, citing 12 examples.
