Hi folks, I'd just like to share my first ancient silver that I got in the mail today. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like Julia Mamaea OBV: IVLIA MAMAEA AVG REV: IVNO AVGVSTAE RIC 341 (?) Anyways, here's the coin. If anyone has any more info to add it would be much appreciated. Thanks, Simon
Not bad for your first tme. Here's a bit more info from wildwinds: Julia Mamaea AD 222-235 Silver Denarius "Juno, mother of the emperors" Obv: IVLIA MAMAEA AVG - Diademed bust right, draped Rev: IVNO AVGVSTAE - Juno seated left, holding flower (effigy of an emperor?) and short scepter (swathed infant?) Rome mint AD 222-235 = RIC IVii, 341, page 98
When you click on the coin, open the text. I like to look at the text version on all the coins presented. You never know what someone else may have been able to put together about that particular coin and save yourself a lot of work. I also like to verify whatever I read on wildwinds just to be on the safe side.
Not bad for a first coin, better then a boring junk constantine era. This is also one of the better reverse types for her. Cant say it is worth $20 shipped, but for a first coin and to learn about it, its worth it education wise.
I also underestimated the size. I thought it was going to be about the size of a dime or so. Nope, that thing is a little bit bigger than I expected! I'll put it on display on my shelf.
Makes the purchase even better imo You buying your first ancient silver coin reminds me of my first silver ancient, a denarius of Vespasian.
I bet you always will remember it. I still remember my first ancient bronze and silver. I bought them at the same time, a bronze thessaly facing head and an ugly silver parthian drachm. I spent hours looking at the beautiful greek piece, and even at then time didn't spend much time looking at the parthian. How that ended up wih me collecting persian coins and owning relatively few "better looking" greeks I still have no idea how it happened.
