Really cool coins everyone! I just had to have one of these after reading The Hellenistic World: Using Coins as Sources by Peter Thonemann. Here's a link to a review. http://www.coinsweekly.com/en/Archi...ld---Using-Coins-as-Sources/8?&id=4139&type=n
Read somewhere, when the movie first came out, that the "engineers" in Prometheus were inspired by the portrait of Herakles on Alex III tet. Not sure about that, but still...
No... I think you have it reversed. The Prometheus Engineers INSPIRED the portraits of Herakles all over the Greek World... Isn't that what the basis of the Movie was all about???
Incredible posts everyone!!! I'll resist sharing my budget versions---a drachm and a lifetime bronze and merely note that I'm still in the market for a Tet as nice as all of those already posted.
I picked up a very nice one a couple of years ago when AJ upgraded his KINGS OF MACEDON, Alexander III AR tetradrachm, 17.14 gm late lifetime issue, struck in Aradus c. 324/3 BCE Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev: BAΣIΛEΩΣ AΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ; Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; I in left field; AP monogram below throne Ref: Price 3325 ex Colosseo Collection (images by Colosseo Collection)
I procured mine from red spork a while back - I will have to trust his attribution since I have yet to look at the reference for Alexander coins (but would love to get into this series more... darn budgets and other interests...) Kingdom of Macedon Alexander III (the Great), r. 336-323 B.C. (c. 325-315 B.C.) Pella Mint, AR Tetradrachm; 27.72mm x 17.2 grams Obv.: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin Rev.: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus Aëtophoros enthroned left, holding eagle and sceptre, ΣΙ in left field Ref.: (Price 236, Mueller 1397) Ex. red_spork
I would love to collect these heavily as well but they're outside my budget. In fact I feel I got mine cheaper than other examples. Forum has a the same coin but not as nice and more expensive.
