sell?! ... gawd, you call yourself a collector!!? I don't listen to dudes that don't have enough skill to buy stuff that they plan on keeping (ummm, or hoarding as you seem to call it) ... hey, I'm sure that we both think that we're correct ... Two different styles, my friend (shake it off)
oops ... ummm, occasionally I take this coin stuff a bit too seriously/personally (my bad if I was a bit of a dick) I don't sell my coins and "upgrade" ... I merely have a couple of examples of a few items in my "hoard" ... (ummm, not that I'm a "hoarder") ... good coin-times!!?
I see a lot of inconsistency here. You can not be a 'only the best' collector with a couple hundred coins and at the same time have all the cities, the big provincials or the great rarities. Being in perfect condition makes a coin more expensive but it does not make it more interesting. My favorite coins are not the ones that are most 'perfect' but the ones that are least boring.
To clarify - my aim is to find the most interesting coin for each ruler in the best quality i can afford. I'm aiming for a collection with lots of variety and exotic types. If there isn't an imperial reverse that 'speaks' to me, I look for provincials which do. When I started out collecting, all I cared about was 'one per ruler'.. Then I found some of the coins i acquired just weren't satisfying to me... So I found replacements which I enjoyed more, and sold what I didn't like. With each iteration, my collection becomes more satisfying to me. That's my collecting aesthetic. I'll only ever have a few hundred coins, but that's how I enjoy the hobby. Others have different approaches. It's personal. There's differences, but there's no right or wrong.
Hey => coins rock!! I'm very glad that we all seem to collect 'em a bit differently ... gawd, otherwise it'd get pretty fricken expensive always trying to out-muscle Ancient Joe for our next coin-target!!
A human, and they are pretty awesome! Lol, you would like that wouldn't you. You little devil! Love you guys, peace!
