Just got this in from APMEX today and they made me wait 14 days, I have bought a ton of moderns from them with a turn around time of 3-4 days, so an extra 10 days, so will probably buy elsewhere when it comes to this kind of coin. Usually the rout from Oklahoma City goes to Denver then grand junction then to Las Vegas and then to Henderson then out for shipment this time however started in Oklahoma City the to Denver, but thats where the similarity ends from there it went to Los Angeles, then to Vegas and on to Henderson then out for delivery, they told me it was going to arrive the day before, they lied to me...LOL Here are some stats on the 1904: Mintage: 6,256,699 1904-S Mintage: 5,134,175 1904-Pr 98 Next coin up if I can find one is going to be the 1881-S which has a significantly less mintage, I have only found 2 on ebay and none at the usual place APMEX, JM Bullion Enjoy
It is the most common date of the bunch with a high raw mintage, however you need to take in to account then many years have barley 62,s if that, this was a APMEX random date 64, so was already expecting an 04, its just to get my feet wet...LOL
Nice coin. Can't go wrong with a 64. I've always had a hankering for a 1908 Saint. Probably with the motto, but I wouldn't be too picky. Not like I'm going to snag a 1907.
Liberties in high grades are a tough get, scanning on ebay you will only find 63,s and below, its allot easier to find Saints in high grades then liberties, since I am really in to the old west, currently on the hunt for 1881-S way lower mintage then the 04, anything in the 1870,s will suit as well, done with the moderns for now as I already filled up a slab box !
Cheaper to just watch western movies After the old west comes shipwreck/ pirate gold... you've been warned
I still don’t have a $20 Liberty, $20 Saint, or $10 Indian in my type set. Considering that these generic gold coins are so common, I’m going to wait for spot prices to drop to $1200 range before I add these coins to my collection. Back in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, I got myself a generic $10 Liberty as gold was relatively cheap back then ($1200 oz): With gold prices still being relatively high, I’m going to focus on buying scarcer type coins rather than generic gold coins. Instead of a common date double eagle, I bought myself a $3 Indian Princess as a college graduation present last year:
Truly a really nice gold coin! I don't own one of those yet and I may never own one. I prefer Saint Gaudens but I don't remember seeing you show one. Are you a Saint Gaudens avoider or is that on your list as well?
Not an avoider...LOL, the fact that I have so many AGE,S with the same obverse image would probably confuse me...LOL, I ve already finished filling out my modern slab box, and have already filled a tube of both 1 OZ GOLD ( Raw ) 1/10 GOLD ( Raw ) So have decided to go with the $20 liberties next, the 1904 was a random date picked by APMEX in M/S 64, a nice coin but one of the more common ones. I have really done my research, am currently on the hunt for a 1881-S , problem is coins from this era high examples are hard to find plus this particular date is 5 times scarcer then the 1904 listed above, I am seeing allot of eye appealing A/U 50 - 58,s that look really good that look way better then some 60-63 that I am seeing, some of these coins go for 7K - 50K so there not cheap ! Saints are less expensive and have found higher grades available, but for now stuck in the $20 Liberty mode
I would say good luck to seeing GOLD at $1,200 an once, so you will probably be dead by the time that happens...LOL, FYI there are only a couple common dates in $20 liberty and the 1904 is one of them, this was a random pic in MS/64 but still a $2,400 dollar plus coin so there not giving them away..LOL and there are several years where A/U coins are $7-$15 and even more so a few dollars in your pocket helps, sticking with $20 Liberties for now like to sty at or near that 1 OZ figure
The number of Liberty DEs that are close to the price of gold is much much less than that for Saint-Gaudens DEs.
