Wow.. I left you hanging there, I missed your post way back when...

Anyway, It has MS details, and I'm not seeing wear, but I'm not seeing the luster either I'd expect from a MS coin, I'd venture an AU55 (aside from the scratch) ... How does the coin appear in hand? Is there more luster than what shows through on your photo's? Is it graded or raw right now? If graded what was the verdict? Was it penelized harshly for the scratch or was it ungraded and bodybagged?

The three legged buff has long been one of my favorites not just because I love nickels, but because I love and enjoy error coins as well. These coins are simply FUN!

In hand, the coin appears to be an AU to me. I bought it mostly for the detail, then found the scratch. Quite an expensive lesson, for which the coin gods have now forgiven me. I always thought AU-55 or so, but always wanted another buffalo collector's opinion.

The 3-leg has always been one of my faves too. My father never owned many nice coins, he always wanted a 3-leg and a 22 no D. I have owned XF examples of each. He did, however have a 09-S VDB, something that has escaped my collection.

    My best dealer cherrypick

I got a 1943 P Nickel in an NGC MS-66 FS old holder for 30.00! Here is the kicker it is the 1943 DDO Double EYE not listed on the holder!!

HOLY COW!! Way to go! Did you spend some time Cherrypicking the dealer or was it just luck of the draw, and you noticed it after you purchased it? That is an AWESOME find, that just pumps me up! Did you send it back to NGC to have the variety attributed? If not you may want to check into it, you don't even have to do a crack out, just send the slab and all to NGC and they re-slab and add the attribution with no risk of lowering the grade!! It only costs a few bucks and is very much worth it since there is about a $3,000 price difference between the 2! :)

Ya know for $400 even 8 years ago, not half bad... Even with the scratch disclosed, in todays market this coin would go for about 1,300 - 1,500 ... very easily I would think, Not bad at all for a $400 investment.

I sent the Doubled Eye out this morning!! What would be the best way to sell this coin, there are only 4 coins at this grade by NGC so this coin would be the top pop. I didn't even know it was what it was until I took a close look at it about 5 days later!! I couldn't believe the dealer had this coin and didn't even know it!

I havn't ever sold my coins, I would guess Heritage Auctions would be a good place, and there is always good ol ebay, I would highly suggest a high reserve price to protect it as the ebay market can be fickle at times unless you are just looking to cash out for a quick buck...

BTW ... Gotta ask... PICTURES PLEASE????

I just purchased a ((1856 - eBay description)) 5 cent nickel (with rays - not in the description) - very cheaply. Pictures were very blurry but rays are there and condition looks to be somewhere between good and fine. I strongly suspect it's 1866 and cannot wait to get it in my hands. :) Seller was not selling anything but garage/estate sale looking items and was the only coin they were selling. It's like a scratch off ticket, and I hope I win...

If not, is was fun to take the gamble... I'll post pictures when it arrives.

Dak, do you really think it is worth 3k? The NGC guy called today to ask me if I would like to get it regraded. I would be all up for it if it atleast stays the same grade with a chance at MS67. you know?

If you decide to re-submit, make sure you note that you want a minimum of 67 or no grade. If the coin doesn't warrant the 67 they will leave it in the 66 holder.

Just wanted to second that, but also specify MS67 Full Step as the minimum grade or no grade, It is worth more as a MS66 Full Step DDO Double Eye than a Plain MS67 DDO Double Eye in my little ol opinion... and yes... I do think you could find a buyer at least at $2,500 very easily and higher with pationce!

Thankyou Dak, I still want the variety on the holder though. I will call them monday and tell them MS66 FS is the lowest to go but I do want the variety listed on the new holder if it doesn't make a 67. Do you think it has a shot at 67?

    New Update

I just got off the phone with NGC and they said it is the coin is on its way home. The only thing struck me as funny was that it was graded MS-66 5 FS. Is that bad. I could have sworn that there were 6 Full Steps.

There are 6 steps, but apparently on your coin only 5 of them are full. Did they give the coin the DDO designation ?

I'm not so sure that that is the FS-029 Double Eye Variety. I have 3 from fine to MS-63 and the second eye is very well defined just like picyured in cherry pickers! I would think one with such a sherp strike would have the same well defined eye IMHO. Looks like die chips or debris. Hope I am the one that is wrong though.
Fivas and Stanton state that ALL 1943 nickels are double dies. Is the R in Liberty the Star and the 3 also doubled as well as the 4?
