A couple of '70's silver art bars that I picked up today at a coin show............ The first one....... A 1-oz "Prairie Schooner" silver art bar (PAT-11). It was minted by the Patrick Mint in 1973. I paid $20.00 for it (spot closed at $18.02). The second one......... A 1-oz "Graf Zeppelin" silver art bar (ONE-5). It was minted by One Mint in 1973, however, the 4th edition Archie Kidd silver art bar price guide mentions that there were two separate mints that used the same reverse and the Sierra Mint was one of those mints that used the reverse type shown above. Mintage of 2500 according to the silver art bar price guide. Serial # 2400. I paid $18.50 for it (spot closed at $18.02).
I believe I saw the headless horseman bar, that is awesome, I am going to have to keep my eye out for that one. Great collections and thanks for the pics everybody.
Anybody interested in my 1st Edition Collector's Guide to Silver Bars. Published in 1973 and in minty mint condition, nevr used. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300469531620
A local coin shop find today.............. It is a "Pine Tree Shilling" silver art bar (CGSF-5). It was minted by Coin Galleries of San Francisco. I paid $22.50 for it (spot silver closed at $21.46/oz). According to the 4th edition Archie Kidd silver art bar price guide book, this bar had a mintage of 7,500.
The following bar is not a silver art bar minted in the 1970's but it is an interesting find in what I thought was an unusual place from where I usually find silver art bars. It is a 1-oz "Centennial Chattanooga Choo-Choo" silver art bar. Minted in 1980 but I do not know what private minted produced it and I do not know how many were minted. The "A0607" stamp is the serial number. The 4th edition of the Archie Kidd book does have it listed but there is no information on it. The 5th edition Archie Kidd silver bar price guide might have some updated information on this art bar. I bought this silver art bar at a flea market in Tennessee today. I usually do not go to flea markets to find silver art bars but this was an unexpected find for me in what I thought was an unusual place. I usually go to my local coin dealers and to coin shows to find silver art bars. I guess I will start going to flea markets more often now. I paid $24.00 for this bar. (Spot silver finished at $22.09/oz). I remember seeing this silver art bar on ebay but I do not see it that much there and I spend a lot of time looking at silver art bars on ebay. Within the last year or so, I have seen only 2 regular ebay auctions on this Chattanooga Choo-Choo silver art bar but the last auction that I have seen on this particular art bar was several months ago. The last ebay winning auction price for this bar that I remember seeing was $61. Of course I love this silver art bar. I feel good finding interesting silver art bars.
Hang on to that bar 1970SilverArt as it is a fairly rare one. It was minted in less than 1500 pieces in 1980 by a not yet determined mint (most likely it was a private issue from the train company). It is mentioned in the 6th edition of the 'indexed guide book' from Archie at page 67 with a minimum value of $125 !
I plan to hold on to this silver art bar. I love it too much to let it go. Thanks for posting this information. I did not know that. I did buy a 6th edition Archie Kidd from Ken Potter on ebay a few days ago. I am waiting for it to come in the mail. It will probably be in the mail sometime next week. That should help me identify some silver art bars that are more recent.
A poster from another forum called Collectors Universe mentioned that the "Centennial Chattanooga Choo-Choo" silver art bar (see post # 149) was minted by the Freedom Mint of Philadelphia PA.
That choo-choo is a good find. I found a bar yesterday that has some good toning to it.(for an art bar) It`s a happy b-day bar that I can`t find any info for online.(I don`t have any of the books yet)
It's most likely a 'SilverTowne Mint' bar ST-24 , minted in 1983 (but i can't tell for sure w/o seeing the reverse side of the bar)
This is a 'SilverTowne Mint' bar for sure. With this type of reverse side (type 15), it is known as ST-24V3 , minted in 1989 with an unknown mintage.
Thanks orpheus....without any books and a semi limited amount of online sites to go on, it can be frustrating trying to find info on some bars and rounds. I`m thankful for the people on these forums that have helped me out immensely. : )
I was at my favorite dealer`s shop today and found a nice Belford mint Peacemaker bar (1973) for only 50 cents above spot. Anyone have mintage numbers on it?
Yep. It is indeed a Belford Mint silver art bar. The mintage number for the 1973 Belford Mint "Peacemaker" silver art bar is 15,000 according to the 4th edition of Archie Kidd's silver art bar guidebook.
