I know many of you have pets, but are any of them numismatists like you? My dog Daisy is. I recently posted a picture of my dog Daisy and I admiring a Walking Liberty half dollar that I had won in a @lordmarcovan giveaway. ( https://www.cointalk.com/threads/lordm-giveaway-78-twelve-drawings.401127/page-14) [post # 267] @lordmarcovan did warn me to beware of Daisy drool -- the coin stayed in its plastic cover. Daisy’s interest in coins started, though, some time ago. One day I needed to run a variety of errands and got home a little later than I had hoped. When I went to let the dogs out for a potty break, I noticed a pile of shredded paper and quarters on the den couch. One of the dogs had destroyed a roll of quarters. First, the backstory. About a year and a half ago my wife and kids visited the local SPCA and came home with Daisy. She is a sweet dog, but we really need to stop visiting the pound. (No, not really). My wife and I have matching recliner chairs in the den. When I am sitting in my chair with the foot-rest raised, Daisy likes to nap between my feet. When she isn’t with me, she is either on the foot-rest of my wife’s chair or on the couch that she seems to have adopted. I like to do my coin searches while relaxing in my chair. I have an end table to hold all the coin paraphernalia (coins to search, paper wrappers, computer, loupe, various containers, microscope, etc.). My computer has the relevant information about the coins I’m looking for, and the microscope (for my old weak eyes) projects to the computer screen. Daisy often pays close attention to my coin search routine. SO, this is what I think happened. Daisy caught the coin collecting bug. Seeing her chance while I was out, she snagged a roll of quarters off the end table, took it to her couch and went through them. When I cleaned up the mess she made, I only found $9.75. Clearly she found a quarter she wanted for herself. I just know it was a “W” mint; Daisy knows how excited I get when I find a West Point minted quarter. Legend has it that animals temporarily gain the power to talk at midnight on Christmas eve. I’m thinking about trying to stay up late that night to ask her about her collection. Do any of your pets have a special hobby??
Our cat, Smarty, thinks she is special when she lays around on my coin table. She likes to be involved and sometimes will knock over a tub All is well until @lordmarcovan and his cats appear on the screen and she turns away with jealousy written all over her face She doesn't realise she is not the only cat that enjoys the hobby.
I've mentioned before that starting in about 2006 my cat Cuddles collected coins that she would steal from my desk when I wasn't looking. Trying to get one back from her was like trying to take one of her kittens away--not something to do without a pair of heavy gloves! Cuddles is gone now--I lost her just before Christmas of 2014, but I treasure her collection--it's in the SDB right along with mine. She had added a few more halves and quarters. Seems like just like me she simply couldn't deal with the smaller denominations.
Lots of entertainment they are. Cats and dogs. I caught my Cat Daxter stealing from his Xmas stocking early. It's a plastic ball filled with Catnip. Here he is hanging out, literally.
LOL @ that old picture. My sister puts out a family calendar every year, and it so happens that that old pic of me and Roadie the Foster Kitten is on this month’s page. Roadie got his name because he was found in the road. Later, after we nursed and fattened him up for adoption, he was adopted by a lady who was driving out west, so he went “on the road again”, like the Willie Nelson song. Not all our rescue fosters have had happy stories, but Roadie did. He was a handsome little devil, too. (And yes, I was at my desk doing coin stuff when I got that visit from Roadie. Couldn’t keep the li’l booger off my desk.)
Oh yeah…… My wild child pup has quite an affinity for gold dollars. She prefers to bite them to confirm their authenticity.
Ha Ha! If that doesn't take the cake. My Dog likes to steal my wife's glasses when he acts up. Either that or rocks and sticks when he comes in from a walk. Look at their faces. How can you get mad at them?
All mine steals from me is my chair... she don't care how long she has to wait. She knows I don't stay put long.
Thanks, but I find it cringeingly overwritten and verbose, looking at it now. Hoo, you think I’m longwinded nowadays? I used to be a lot worse!
