Agree, although don't see it as quite the challenge or affront to/against the 1921 Morgan. If folks want this new replica...and that's essentially what it is, a non-circulating replica of the Morgan...as a souvenir or keepsake, so be it...it's not a blot on or against the genuine article...simply a tribute to it. It's to honor, celebrate, and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the one and only...the last of the best of the originals. The real irony to me is that I believe the older, convex breast Morgans...the coins from 1878 through 1904...are generally better-looking than the 1921 coins, if only a little. To each their own.

Wow. I think there's more skill and craftsmanship in the Chinese counterfeits.

That is exactly what I was saying to those defending the purchases today—they are hideous copies of Morgans. It not only does not glorify the anniversary of the Morgan series; it shows the terrible engraving, and design skills of the US mint today.

The contrast in quality is striking, there's no question.

Based on the images I have seen, I tend to agree with you. I do want to see one in person before I totally condemn them...but my hopes are not high. I also didn't buy any (for the reasons above) so I don't know when I will see one in hand.

Also...costs of nearly $500 in the presales is nuts. Hard pass.

Was just looking at the mint site for the 2021 Peace - the thing looks hideous.

The sad thing is...those computer photos are all dolled up to make the coin look ideal...if that's ideal I shudder to think what the real thing looks like. haha.

I will say I was almost sickened by the type 2 silver eagles on the photos but when I got my 2 ( that’s a different mint error story ) I was ok with them . Not as bad as I thought though I guess my mint standards are low .

Has anyone actually seen a picture of one of the new 2021 Morgan dollars being made this year? In the mint catalog and Webb site they don't show an actual coin. I'm not sure why at this point it appears the mint hasn't struck any of these coins. I'm sure they had to do some test strikes by now. Show a picture please..... I'm only hoping they didn't model it after a 1921 Morgan. The 1921 Morgan was more of a flat strike whereas the earlier design 1878 was much nicer. If they're like the ones struck between 1878 and 1904 it may be a winner but, if like a 1921 than I would rather spend the money on a 1921. Don't need to though because I already have a bunch of 1921's and I paid a lot less that $85.00 for mine.

I haven't seen one in person. I'm not a huge fan of change...but I did think it looked nice in the photos.

I saw a couple of the 2021s in hand, that a friend of mine purchased. They have none of the detail, intricacy, variation of texture, or attempt at portrait shading that the originals have, in their engraving process. The old designs had a 3D type texture, on a two dimensional, low relief coin, and it is beautiful. The 2021s look totally flat, and texture less. To me, they have a comic book quality. As I said before, as regards modern day Morgan reproductions, Dan Carr does a much better idea of what a modern day Morgan should look like, with his fantasy overstrikes. The current US Mint ones are really horrible. Most world coins have superior designs and engraving to the recent US Mint issues. Even the 1921 Morgans, that were not considered the best of Morgan production, have more texture than the current mint trainwrecks.

My friend is able to get prototypes, long before public release. He has connections to the mint, so he gets examples about a month it two before general public release.

The Mint only caters to coin investors. As a collector, I will pass.

I feel like you are describing a 1909 Lincoln Cent vs. a 2021 Lincoln Cent. Quality of design has been lost to mass production.

I was able to get a new S-Mint yesterday after I had a D in the bag and 2 S mints in the bag. How I ended up with one S I do not know? Now why did I buy one is really the question right? I got one because everyone obviously wanted one. So that tells me demand will drive up the price, at least for awhile so how can I lose?

That tells me that you could care less about the design (or lack of), and only what profit might be made, so for you, a comparison between the two issues would be a moot point. But I guess a lot of people will be holding them for a short time only before putting them on the Bay

Cracks me up these folks deciding the new dollars are going to look like crap based on some low detail graphics and not the actual coins that are going to be delivered. How the heck do you know at this point!? One of you says you saw some prototypes - again, not the actual coins that will be delivered.
