This week my brother, wife and three daughters were going to British Columbia, there was mass flooding so they cut there trip short and came down to visit. We have had a blast. great having family visit.
Today a coin came in the mail from another Family member, a Ancient Family member, its great to have people you haven't even met, sharing coin's with you. Our young Ancient collectors are awesome, great knowledge. Some day they will be the back bone of the hobbie.

Thank you Chrsmat71,Chris this coin is awesome great patina, desert brown and green..Thanks i love it..
So to all my Ancient coin collectors, you are a awesome Family...

    Nice comments Eng ...

I totally agree => there are a whole lotta good coin-comrades on this coin site (cheers)

That's a cool coin that you got from chrsmat71, eh?

... ummmm, but as far as family members go, I'm pretty sure that chrsmat71 would be the "Cousin It" of our coin family, yes?

Ren Zong is an interesting emperor. He actually hand created the "slender gold" script of Chinese writing, widely regarded as the most beautiful Chinese caligraphy in existence. There are large 10 cash pieces of his in "slender gold" script he is rumored to have written personally. I bought a group of XF pieces years ago and wish I had bought more.

I know many western collectors just cannot get into Chinese coins. They are different. But, once you get into them more, you start to notice things like the "shen" of the coin, the balance and artistry of the characters. Most of this artistry is lost on someone who does not pay much attention to the coins. Its like all fields of coin collecting, the more you learn the more interesting they become. :)

I'm one that has never been able to get into Chinese coins and increasing import restrictions might make that a good thing anyway. One thing to understand is that there are a lot of Chinese coins that will look exactly alike to people like me and be very different to those who appreciate and have studied the subject. On several occasions over the last few decades I have decided that I should try to get into them again but I still have not got to the point that I appreciate them to the degree of medoraman let alone the real hardcore Chinese specialists who pay big prices for some of the coins. On each occasion, I generally buy a few more cash from Frank Robinson's list and discover I am not ready to get into them deeply.
    http://www.fsrcoin.com/112.htm

The obvious start might be one of the small groups like 50 Northern Sung cash for $34.50. If you work through them and identify the bunch with interest to spare, you will start adding different things like Pan Liangs, Whu Chu and Wang Mang coins. I suggest sticking with the VF and higher ones since at this point you will not appreciate what makes the rare ones he sells in good worth as much as the common one in EF. A good purchase would be the $42 Hartill book but there is enough online that you can delay it until you decide you are at least as interested in the coins as I am (a little). There are many other reasonable sources for Chinese coins and an equal number of fake sellers. There is a high demand for the fakes from people interested in feng shui or who just like pretty baubles and don't care that they are modern. Below are five images selected because I had them at hand in the files. I have never finished photographing my later things (mostly the Sung Dynasty cash). I will warn that there are references with more than one system of transliterating Chinese into English so you may get confused when you read song in one place and sung in another.

I apologize for what must seem like an effort to insert coins into a thread about --- well, I'm not sure what this thread was about.

Does this guy provide pictures, All I see is text. Do you guess what you get? How does this work? Please list alternates?

I know there is a reason you buy here, I am not sure HOW to buy here? How do you know what you are getting?

I don't think I would buy coins in this fashion.

Doug and I will both vouch for Frank. He is a "no frills" dealer but if anything his coins are usually better than I expect.

I have a link to Ebay sellers who sell authentic coins as well if anyone is interested. There are a FEW there still, but 99% of the sellers there peddle fakes.

I go in and out of Chinese coins. I keep all I have when I am "out" just because I know someday I will get more into them, just like my US coins, (maybe).

Btw, I am with Doug. I do not spend big money on any great rarities at all. You can spend your whole life collecting Chinese coins and never spend more than $10 on any individual coin. I did pay more than that recently though for some mother mold pieces. I simply found them fascinating and very rare.

OK I found some obv / rev pictures of just a mish mash of coins. This does not seem easy. Do you just pick a number you want to spend and send it to FR and if you happen to put the highest number you get the coin? Do you do this by snail mail? How do you snipe?

His Chinese coins he sells on a fixed price list. Just go to his world coin price list, or the bottom of his auction, and see coins and prices. You simply order. As to what the coins look like, he uses Schjoth numbers, or Hartill, but Hartill has both. Its a great book, cheap, and the single best Chinese coin reference in English there is. If you want to get into Chinese a little, its really a mandatory investment.

Any other questions, just let me know man.

Wow, that's definitely one of the nicest things you've ever said to me (*sniffle, sniffle*) ... you rock too, mentor!!

    ;)

Great coins, fellas!! (yah, sadly I am not a super-fan of these Chinese washers, but I also realize that there are different strokes for different folks!!)

=> so please keep-on bringin' your examples!! ... I'm sure that a lot of ya probably think that some of my coins are a waste o' cash and not worthy, right? (oh, and I'm very okay with that side-of-the coin ... I like learning about all types of coins)

=> oh, and like our host, Eng, stated at the beginning of this thread =>
