Al, Fascinating write-up and 'artifact'---my interests mirror your own and I guess the metal content does differentiate the AES RUDE from a 'rock' as well as being properly authenticated. I notice quite a few at auction ...and I will pull the trigger one of these days.

I have a few 'historical curios' like the dolphin 'money' (already posted) and such---but again, it's a matter of faith with that trusted dealer...

    I have a 'fibula'---the original 'safety-pin' LOL---Does that count??

Seriously though, an Aes Rude is definitely on my want list. I think you did the smart thing getting it from FORVM. You need a well-trusted dealer on these pieces - not something you just pick up on eBay.

I agree...took me a long time to commit. FORVM had a sale and the item at a price that enabled me to pull the trigger. I agree, I was ONLY looking for a source that I could trust. Yes, in my view it is a coin... but an odd one at that! :D Seems there are not too many players in this game (only Doug had one...)

Heck yes the fibula counts! :) They probly traded those all the time for other goods! I agree, must be from a trusted dealer and to have a little faith. I think it is a fun piece that rounds out my RR collection.

I was wondering the same thing... and how the heck was a spear tip passed through airport security?

Whelp, I have purchased / acquired a few odd items in my travels. I bought some Chinese Wine: one with lizards in it, the other bottle with mice in it. Supposed to enhance your health! Carefully wrapped them, and put them in my baggage with a song and a prayer, and by-golly, they made it home! Still have them! This was before 9-11.

Also actually owned Ivory carvings...however, after I paid, they stamped the receipt with huge red lettering laying out the law if I carried them over a border, on and on with a $10,000 fine, etc... had them for a day, took them back and bought Mammoth Tusk Ivory carvings...they are perfectly legal as they have been extinct for over 50,000 years! Have Suse and my Chinese Zodiac symbols in Mammoth Tusk Ivory: A Boar (me) and a Rabbit (my wife).

Got a bunch other odd-ball stuff that @Ancientnoob would probly freak over, LOL :D Some were coins, or money-type acquisitions...

I see a lot of really cool antiquities at shows, and I love looking through them, but I can never seem to bring myself to spend money on them. Not when I'm surrounded by coins.

This is my dilemma, too many coins to spend money on nice non-numismatic antiquities(well, this and the fact that my cat is a jerk and would probably find a way to break anything expensive and fragile like pottery).

'A' cat??? I have now ended up with FIVE as relatives and friends leave the area and look for a soft touch to leave them with LOL

And they never leave me alone while I'm at this computer....trying to catch the mouse-pointer and other crazy stuff...

Nice write-up Al. I posted most of my AES rude a few days ago. I also think the key to buying Aes Rude is picking your dealer. I think really old copper / bronze would have a different fingerprint than modern copper / bronze. We have a collector in our area with a metal analyzer (I'm not sure of the type). He analyzed a Texas Jola and said the metals analysis confirmed the coin was from metal produced in the right time. You could see if a university in your area would like to help with this kind of research.

I have seen metals analysis on RR silver (in the Celator I think). I do not recall seeing an analysis of RR bronze.

Wow, that is very helpful! I saw your thread with the collection...it was what got me to pull the trigger! Fortunately, I do not have big money in it, so I will trust my provenance.

LOL, I still have them, but on a later trip, my daughter and her husband begged me to get some for them. I brought them back, they had a party with their friends (Army), and they ended up drinking them! Said they could not tell any taste difference!
