To the OP, I like the Constantinople comemorative coin #2. I found one in a large batch of LRBs which turned into a wonderful learning experience in itself. The coin in high grade has been on my want list for a long time but I've yet to get one. I like the example you have. Here is a Weblink which describes the coins minted (in huge quantities) which commemorated the new capital: http://www.constantinethegreatcoins.com/comm/
I have a computer database file that keeps record of what I paid for each of my coins. If I set up a report to display how much I have spent on coins in the time I have been in the hobby I could tell you what I have spent on the coins I still own. I don't have that report and don't plan on it since I don't plan on selling them all. Similarly, I have spent a certain amount over the past decades on movies, snack foods, admissions to attractions etc. but I don't have a database for those. In neither case do I believe my enjoyment would benefit by knowing the number. Have I spent as much on amusements as I have on coins? I don't know and feel that this is one case where ignorance really is bliss.
I've you've been collecting ancients for 30+ or more years, I don't see how that report could be easy to make. I started out from the very beginning organizing my coins and so it is mostly easy. All I have to do is make sure I add the information for each coin when I get them. Also, Tantalus calculates some stats for you automatically.
I don't have a record for every coin in my collection but I remember where I got almost every one of them. The Constantinople commemorative above was in a batch of ancients. According to this CoinTalk thread, I spent $0.74 for it. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/tuition-for-this-roman-coin-education-is-only-40.228106/ It was worth every penny. The link shown is for the benefit of the OP. Several good Websites were listed in the previous thread. Also, Bing turned me onto control-F which allows you to enter a partial legend to find possible matches. Check-out the old thread.
I just passed the $75,000 click on my "ancient-coin-spent-o-meter" ... => man, I sure hope that my wife (or whoever gets 'em) can successfully sell-off my sweet menagerie!! ... or at least trade it for a sweet handful of magic-beans!!
=> ummm hmmm, what's it been? ... 4 years? $18,500 per year => $50 per day on ancient coins ... coincidentally, that's approximately my hourly wage (man, I love that hour) ... => easy-peasy!! ... ummm, hopefully I can get "most/some" of it back?!! Funny eh? ... some people consider this hobby as more of an investment (yah, I'm a bit smarter than those dolts) ... however, I do hope/think that in an extreme emergency I may be able to recover all or a portion of my purchase costs, yes? ... so what do you think? ... I an emergency, if I tried to sell my $75k in coins, what do you think that I'd recover? (10% ... 50% ... 80% ... 100% ... 200%) just curious, my friends (I like you)
Depends on the buyer. If Bing, you get back 20%, if you buy them back yourself, possibly 200%... oh wait, math doesn't add up for that last part . J/k. Seriously, but purely based on my guesses... I think it would depend on your sale venue. If it's an emergency sale with you needing the cash pronto, I think you may get 40-50% from a dealer. If you have the luxury of consigning to an auction house, perhaps 70-100% after fees.
Thanks Z-Bro ... yah, that's kinda what I figured as well ... => if I needed to sell, I have always assumed that I'd be able to get back 50-80% of my fees (depending upon how well my stuff did at auction) thanks ahahaha => I'm sure that a few noobs will be sad to hear this fact
Steve, if you ever had to sell in case of emergency, I would consign everything to CNG. That's where the bigger spenders (like you) go to get their coins. Short of a global economic catastrophe, I'm guessing you'd easily recover your investment. Give it ten or twenty years, and you'd probably make a handsome profit. The quality of your coins is always in demand. As far as consignment goes, you send your coins to a dealer, agree on a price you'd be happy to accept, then it's his job to sell the coins and make enough profit to cover his costs. If anyone has any coins to consign, send me a PM. I'll see what I can do for you in the weekly private sales.
I'm still here, been educating myself for the past two weeks. Have read every page of Doug's site (by the way Doug you did one heck of a job and I for one applaud your effort and devotion to this field) plus some Wiki stuff. I now have a pile of ancients on my desk ready to be attributed and since its raining nows the time to jump into it. I may need a shoulder to lean on from time to time until I get comfortable with it. By the the way I have never sold or traded a coin be it ancient or modern, but I have given a few away in the interest of the hobby, guess I have a soft spot for the YN's.
