I'm gonna go out on a limb, break a taboo and post this before i get it, the obverse anyway Magnentius, maiorina from Trier mint.. a good way to start the other half of the year off i reckon^^ POST YOUR COMMENTS AND COINS PEEPS
It's hard to tell much about the coin, but congrats on your purchase. MAGNENTIUS AE3 OBVERSE: DN MAGNENTIVS P F AVG - Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust right; "A" behind bust REVERSE: VICTORIAE DD NN AVG ET CAE, two Victories standing facing each other, holding wreath between them inscribed VOT V MVLT X in four lines. Oddly, one of my coins from the recent Baltimore show as also a Trier Magnentius AE1. From late in the reign, Magnentius seems t have been hitting the banquet circuit a bit too hard and has an extra chin.
Congrats on the coin @gregarious I've always like the coins of Magnentius, especially his chi-rho issue. I have a rather rough example to offer. It's my only one of him, though I would love to pick up more. Magnentius. AD 350-353. Æ Double Centenionalis (27mm, 7.41 g, 1h). Ambianum (Amiens) mint. Struck AD 353. Obv: Bare headed, draped, and cuirassed bust right Rev: Large Chi-Rho, A to left, ω to right RIC VIII 34
thanks @TheRed , yours is really a nice one.. much less worn than mine. the OP coin's reverse is two viceroys according to the description.
he has a lot of that Dchin thing goin' on on most of his coins. i was hesitant to buy this one at 1st because he didn't have a Dchin on it.
Mine's a bit short on flan. I like the Alpha and Omega on these. Magnentius was trying to pick up Catholic support against Constantius II, who was an Arian.
Great find @gregarious ! This be my peep coins: Purdy ruddy version... RI Magnentius 351-352 CE AE 1 CHI RHO A GREENIE! RI Magnentius 351-352 CE AE 2 Maiorina 2 Victories holding wreath VOT V
huh.. Ayrian, even today's historians don't really say nothing bad about Magnentius, in fact they praise him for his bravery, esp. in his last battle with Constantius ll, when he (Magnentius) lead his army and Constantius ll stayed in a church and prayed..
Cool posts!! I'm looking forward to your photo @gregarious ..... Yep, I have one of Mag-Man too---the roughness just within my tolerance level:
Magnentius has a very distinctive portrait in comparison to many other emperors from the 4th century (the only one to ressemble him is his brother (?) Decentius). Nice coins all! I really need to add a Magnentius to my collection. Those large 4th century coins are very pleasing. I've got my eye on a large Julian II Apis Bull type that is quite reasonably priced, so I'm probably going to go for it.
Since Decentius was mentioned and posted above, I'll add one purchased from Heritage with the original seller photos:
I might have said Julius Caesar or any of roughly 3/4 of the guys who followed him were usurpers in some sense of the word. Trivia: What is the most rare type for Magnentius? Hint: I do not own one but I have shown a Decentius of the type here before.
