Something special about finally getting your first St. Gaudens. It's rather like your first kiss. You will never forget it and then you gotta have MORE!
Oddly enough my first U.S. gold coin was a gold dollar, a Type II no less with a weak, but readable date, 1854. It graded VF. It come from my mother’s cleaning lady, and I acquired it circa 1964. I would think that the $5 gold piece, the Liberty type, might be many people’s first gold coin. It is the most commonly seen gold piece in many non-collector family hoards. The mintages were high for a gold coin, and in VF or less, common date sell for close to melt.
Very nice @Eric the Red . I've been pining for some old gold as well, especially an example of this lady....one day! Pic courtesy of PCGS Coinfacts.
Yup, I recall that you were asking about it in another thread. You have the most information on the 1927 Saint-Gaudens at your disposal in RWB's book. The only additional information worth reading is probably any in-depth commentaries from the Heritage Archives, especially from David Akers if he commented on particular sales.
Congrats to all the new Saint buyers ! Plenty of good Saint-Gaudens threads here that you can chime in on. Or create new ones. Many of us looking for "new blood" and happy to share our information, too.
Yeah, I can see it as a 65....some bag marks in the obverse fields but otherwise good luster and no visible sign of wear. Reverse is very clean. Where did you get it ?
Thank you Randy. I can agree that is an accurate assessment They are like potato chips you can't have just one
