Freaky's coin was struck in Mexico City, the one you picture was struck in Lima, Peru. So yes, of course they are different.
davidh - now I'm cornfused . Are you posting a pic of a fake coin to compare against Garrett's or a pic of a legit one to compare to?
I'm certainly no expert on these coins but the two pictures here show some differences. They are the same date and mint so I don't know if differences would be expected. The damage and wear to the date on Freakey's coin make it hard to properly compare that area but there appear to be subtile differences. The dowwnstroke on the 7 of Freakey's is wedge shaped while on the genuine example it seems to be a straight bar. The 9 on the genuine one has a very slightly open loop, Freaky's is fully colsed. The downstroke of both the 7 and the 9 on the genuine end directly between two dentiles, on Freaky's they end above one dentle. Those may be subjective observations but the major difference is where the last two letters of the word GRATIA end in relation to the bust. On the genuine example the IA are both close to the bust, on Freaky's the A is close and the I is further away. There's nothing that really jumps out and says FAKE on either coin; I'm just pointing out that there are differences in the two.
It's quite normal for there to be minor differences like that David because of the way they produced the dies. The dies for these coins were all made by hand, using punches to place the legends, devices, date - everything. There is one thing that bothers me about Freaky's coin - the edge. That groove you see between the circles and rectangles and the top of the rim (1st pic) should not be there. See the bottom, how there is no groove there - that is how it is supposed to look. Now look at the second pic here. See how the design moves from the bottom of the edge to the top of the edge - that is the joint of the edge design. And the two ends should line up with each other not be offset like that. If there is anything about this coin that would make it suspect that's what it is. But unless he sends it in for authentication we will never know if it is genuine or not. But as I said earlier, even if is real, it's not worth the slabbing fees.
