I started in 98 as well and it was MUCH smaller. Sure you had the scams just like today. Wheats by the pound were rampant then. Big ripoff of the day and you also had a lot more auctions WITHOUT pictures. It will ALWAYS be true - CAVEAT EMPTOR. I know I sometimes will "argue" that point but only to possibly prevent more people from getting ripped off. I don't feel that is a bad thing. What we didn't see in 1998 was a ton of self slabbers that REALLY targeted the newbies. They are worse than "wheats by the pound" as the stakes, and possibly claims, are even higher. My point about "good" sellers leaving is based upon some of the "legit" sellers I have dealt with since then. They may occasionally list on ebay but the bulk of their business is now via their own sites and certainly not an ebay store. They also tend to charge higher dollar so you are right on there. NOT a deal of a lifetime but a bona fide coin as described. Perhaps, in some aspects, ebay has NOT changed that much. What HAS changed is a much wider audience to be ripped off (and by no means just coins). The audience will only continue to grow as the internet grows even further. Can anyone stop it? Doubtful as "one is born every minute". Maybe I'm a dreamer but trying to prevent it as much as possible is not such a bad thing. For every person that DOESN'T fall for garbage the garbage seller takes a hit. They deserve to be hit.
I would have to agree with that, maybe my problem is I just dont remember a time when ebay (the internet in general) didnt have a lot of scammers on it and this is just always how it is...I use several sellers there on a regular bases...they get lots of bids and sales and they arent selling there because they are losing money People take a chance on them, get good service and product and frequent them as favorites. My problem with only buying from sellers I know or trust though is that then I limit my choices and I am always looking for new sellers with good coins and business practice.... Certainly I want a good deal on a coin but to be honest I almost never find great deals on ebay so I dont look for them, I get better deals buying from people on forums. I look for the best deal I can get like anyone. I am just looking for a good coin at a FAIR price, not looking to make or lose money, not look for a profit or to take someone for a valuable coin at a cheap price or be taken. If we all just buy from people we know...we never would meet and develop relationships with new sellers or collector / sellers. I take chances with every new dealer I use but I have found all the good ones by taking a chance and buying from them. I have had a few rocky deals but in the end, I have had very few bad experiences on ebay. I cant say enough how important a decent scan or picture is. I could care less what they grade it and if its slabbed thats fine as long as I am not paying for the slab If I had advice for any seller...photos...good ones...maybe a close up or 2. Less yakkity yak...more photos. I DO think that fake sellers should be exposed at all turns. There are good sellers on ebay making money I assume, they arent selling there because they are losing money. I will also say that sometimes dealers are just charging too much for a coins and blaming it on something besides the high profit margin...honestly...there is NO shortage of good dealers selling on ebay. I see DO see flippers as a problem as well as they are trying to squeeze a few extra dollars off a coin they often didnt get a great deal on in the first place... If some can make more money selling elsewhere though, more power to them. I dont think scammers are hurting good honest sellers in any other way than making people scared of taking a chance on them.
