This is an Ayyubid coin of Al-Nasir Salah al-Din Yusuf II (1237-1260) of Aleppo. A similar example is posted below, and one with a complete inscription (but slightly different format) is on Mehmet Eti's site. Obverse mentions the reigning caliph (words in parenthesis are not visible on your coin) : "(El-imam el-Mustansir) billah Abu Ahmed amir al-muminin". Cmdr. of the faithful, the imam Mustansir, father of Ahmed. Reverse: "(El malik en-Nasir) Salah ed-dunya (veddin) Yusuf bin Mohammed". The defending king, honor of the world and of the faith, Yusuf bin Muhammed. http://users.rcn.com/j-roberts/ayy.htm http://mehmeteti.150m.com/ayyubids/506.htm
wow amazing, another ayyubid coin!! this time Salahaddins grandson, excellent. is it coincidince that both coins have almost similair marks?
They do have a wonderfully ancient look to them. But it is more a matter of the type of coin it is, than of its age. There are some very elaborate Umayyad dinars and dirhams minted for the caliphs. These are copper coins (fals), made by local mints, and probably spent many times by ordinary people. They are very simple, and would have been immediately recognizable as an Umayyad coin, not say, a Byzantine or a Persian one. http://medievalcoins.ancients.info/...l-Walid+bin+'Abd+al-Malik&&cgifunction=Search
yeah those umayyad coins at the link are very nice, i get it now. All of them have diferent mints types, dirhams dinars etc. Most arabic empire coins have similair coins, unlike the ottoman coins. which are completely different.
Maybe you could collect the whole family? Do you mean that both the coins I posted have inscriptions that are worn in a similar manner? It is odd, but I think it must be coincidence.
yeah, that would be good. 1 coin to go from Salahaddin himself, and 2 of his other sons. yes similar worn marks
I have to say, that is a nice grade coin and I have a load of Mughal coins similar to that one but does anyone know a quick and easy way of identifying the mintmarks as I've been looking through Krause and I can't even get them from that.
people did a great job on identifying my mughal coins here very quickly, so you can post your pictures i think. good luck
