At PHIL AFTOOR's table, there was a bargain bin washtub of world crowns. I found two nice 19th century pieces, a 1900 Hungarian 5 Korona and an 1856 France 5 Franc, both in VG/Fine but with honest wear and nice, original surfaces. I bought 12 pieces in all, but the rest were moderns. For me, of those, the coolest were the Egyptian 1 pound and 50 piasters (both crowns; NCLT silvers) commemorating the Aswan Dam project. (For me, numismatics is about capitalism, so, while those were state projects, they were cool engineering that delivered electricity.</p><p><br /></p><p>I also found bargains with DANIEL'S COINS AND CURRENCY. Daniel is a new dealer, but he traced his great-grandfather's coin shop Eagle Coins in Detroit 1910-1950. His story is on the MSNS Website in the Articles Archive.</p><p><br /></p><p>I spent a lot of time with the exhibits. You learn a lot that way. You can read books and I do and I recommend them highly, but nothing beats seeing the material. Former MSNS President Chuck Fenwick displayed FRN Spider Press and Souvenir work from ANA Conventions. </p><p><br /></p><p>MSNS has a major effort on to bring in members. For your $15, you get your choice of a Krause book, typically a $30 value. The award-winning MichMatist costs us $18 per member per year to mail out. Those expenses are why we place a lot of effort on the conventions.
