While your newly acquired notes may not the best examples available, they are desirable and you are fortunate to own them.  Military collectors kill for items that show character resulting from "fair wear and tear" and not from abuse.  Because your notes show evidence of use, and that they probably circulated in a wartime environment, they possess historical value.  Considering the amount you paid and comparing that to what I have seen guys pay for a recovered CW lead bullet or a broken arrowhead, I say your money was well spent.
