Sorry but not quite sure how anything I choose to do would drive you crazy?? Did you even read my post? Not sure you did otherwise you would know I didn't buy an 1881s Listen... I'm the first to say I don't have much experience with coins. Ive already gotten so much value out of this forum and learned so much. Until reading this post I've really enjoyed starting this hobby and absorbing information from people who are more than happy to give advice. I'm wondering if that's really what you're trying to do or just felt like spoiling a noobie's experience. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
The buy the better dates first thing isn't really geared towards newbies. It's more for set collectors that intend on buying all date/mm to completion but if a newbie wants the better stuff and has the $$ then why not start big especially if that newbie has the smarts to get advice from those of us that do know what we're doing. And you do know this thread is about an 81cc and not 81s right? Or were you just using it as a generic date/mm for your story?
Jrs146, Welcome! I began collecting a few years ago, later than I would have liked. I wish I had found this forum sooner than I did as it might have saved me the experience of buying many over graded, cleaned coins. Despite buying books I didn't appreciate what I was really buying until I had spent some time buying coins quickly. Once I found this forum I learned what to look for by reading tons of grading threads. It was kind of like having a tutor at my side. I've found that as long as you are willing to learn, people will freely offer their advice. Since I don't have people close to me who can sit down with my coins, I appreciate having people here to ask when needed. Good luck as your collection grows!
1881-CC's can be pretty boring, I think you chose a good one. I agree with SamClemons above on keys. Most keys are boring to me. Many are saved and many are ugly. Start buying and learning and then figure out what you like.
I will try one more time. In general I don't like people and I never post but this goes to the heart of coin collecting. Some years back I decided to build a small morgan collection. After several months of studying morgan dollars I discovered I really liked the ones that had this pinkish hue that made it look like Ms Liberty was blushing. I set the parameters of my set. I would get one coin from each mint from each decade( 21's included) That featured this particular aspect. It took about six years to track down all the right coins. I can tell you the last coin, an 1891-cc I won on a David Lawrence auction kept me sleepless for two nights before the auction. You do as you like. there is a huge thrill to be had collecting coins, And NO I am not telling you you must build the exact set I just described. I am telling you that you are robbing yourself of the greater journey of personal discovery that is to be had with a more measured approach. You will not here from me again. Good luck.
There's a lot I'd like to say about this post... but since you promised I won't be hearing from you again we can just leave it at that Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
There is no right or wrong if you buy what you like. I only buy GSA coins, and I prefer NGC or no grade.
All things being equal, today GSAs carry a higher premium than their slabbed cousins. Think about it, the GSAs have the smallest chance of being cleaned or manipulated. They probably have been touched the least by human hands. They were stored in govt vaults for decades and then after being sorted by govt ''graders'', they were put into their special holders and sold to the public via multiple promotions. Therefore, if the word ''pure'' can be used to describe a CC, the GSAs come the closest.
This one came in the mail today. I was able to take some better pics. What do you think? I think it looks very nice! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
